Chapter 3 - The DNA Bombshell

Hook: As the handcuffs clicked around his wrists, the detective handed him one final piece of paper: the DNA results proving the baby he ruined his life for wasn't even his.

---

The click of metal handcuffs sounded ridiculously loud in the sterile hospital corridor.

Julian was pulled forward by the officers, his hands forced behind his back. “Get your hands off me! Do you have any idea who I am?! I am the CEO of Sterling Enterprises! I sit on the board of St. Jude’s!”

“Not anymore, Mr. Sterling,” Detective Miller replied with a cold, unyielding professional smile. “The board suspended your position two hours ago following the arrest of Dr. Gable. You are under arrest for corporate fraud, conspiracy to alter medical records, and bribery of a medical professional.”

Sienna was sobbing hysterically as a female officer gently reached out to take the crying baby from her arms. “No! Don’t take my baby! Julian, do something! Call our lawyers! Call your father!”

“Shut up, Sienna!” Julian snarled, trying to pull away from the officers. “You destroyed us! You poisoned Clara! You’re going to rot in prison for this!”

“I did it for us!” she shrieked back, her wrists being bound in steel restraints behind her back. “You told me you wanted a son! You told me Clara was useless!”

“Wait,” I interrupted, stepping forward toward Detective Miller. “Detective, before you take them to processing, there is one final piece of evidence Dr. Vance hasn't read aloud yet.”

Julian glared at me, his eyes wide with desperate rage. “What else could you possibly have, Clara?! You’ve ruined my reputation! You’ve put me in cuffs! What else do you want?!”

Dr. Vance reached into the thick envelope one last time and pulled out a single sheet of paper stamped with a red seal from the State Genetic Laboratory.

“While conducting the forensic review of Dr. Gable’s files,” Dr. Vance explained, looking directly at Julian, “we discovered that a prenatal paternity test was performed quietly nine months ago using samples submitted by Ms. Hayes.”

Julian frowned, a sudden, cold dread washing over his face. “What are you talking about? That’s my son! The birth certificate says Julian Sterling!”

“It does,” Dr. Vance agreed. “However, biological realities do not care about birth certificates. The genetic analysis conducted by our lab confirms a zero percent probability that Julian Sterling is the biological father of the child.”

The corridor went dead silent.

Julian turned his head so fast I heard his neck crack. He looked at Sienna, whose eyes were wide with pure, unadulterated terror.

“What... what did he say?” Julian whispered, his voice cracking like dry wood.

“Zero percent, Julian,” I repeated, letting every word sink into his broken ego. “The boy isn't your son.”

Julian’s face turned from pale to ghostly grey. The one thing he had bragged about—the grand legacy he had used to humiliate me, the child he had held up like a trophy to prove my ‘worthlessness’—was a complete lie.

“Sienna...” Julian breathed, his voice trembling violently. “Who... who is the father?”

Sienna squeezed her eyes shut, silent tears streaming down her hollow cheeks. She couldn't look him in the eye.

“If I may,” Dr. Vance added calmly, adjusting his glasses, “the court-ordered genetic comparison matched the infant’s DNA profile with another profile in the criminal registry: Dr. Marcus Gable.”

Julian let out a raw, guttural scream of pure humiliation and rage. “DR. GABLE?!”

He lunged toward Sienna, completely losing control, but the two police officers tackled him against the wall, holding him down as he thrashed and screamed.

“YOU SLEPT WITH MY DOCTOR?!” Julian roared, his face pressed against the cold wall. “YOU WERE SLEEPING WITH GABLE WHILE HE WAS ALTERING CLARA’S RECORDS?!”

“He said he would expose me if I didn’t!” Sienna wailed, breaking down completely on the floor. “He knew I was swapping Clara’s meds! He threatened to tell you! I had to keep him quiet! Julian, please! I love you! Please help me!”

“Get them out of here,” Detective Miller ordered sharply.

The officers dragged Julian and Sienna down the hall, their hysterical screaming and sobbing echoing off the walls until the double doors slammed shut behind them.

I stood in the middle of the hallway, watching the puddle of spilled milk on the floor.

Dr. Vance walked up to me, handing me a clean paper towel to wipe a stray speck of formula from my shoe. “It’s over, Clara. The DA is filing criminal charges, and the court has issued an emergency order freezing all Sterling Enterprises assets pending the fraud investigation.”

I took a deep breath, feeling the air fill my lungs fully for the first time in three years. The weight that had been crushing my chest—the invisible weight of shame, self-doubt, and grief—was completely gone.

“Thank you, Audrey,” I whispered.

“Don’t thank me yet,” he smiled gently. “You still have a foundation to reclaim. And a life to rebuild.”

Just then, my phone buzzed in my coat pocket. It was a text message from Ethan Vance, Audrey’s younger brother and the top corporate attorney in the state, who had been working silently in the background with me for the past six months.

‘The freeze on Julian’s accounts went through. The board of the Vance Foundation has called an emergency vote for tomorrow morning to reinstate you as Chairwoman. Ready to take back what’s yours?’

May you like

I typed back a single word: ‘Always.’
