Chapter 3 - THE AMATEUR’S STAGEAt 8:30 AM the next morning, the grand glass-and-steel skyscraper of Apex Global Holdings stood tall against the bright Miami sun.

The 40th-floor executive board room was the pinnacle of corporate luxury. Panoramic views of Biscayne Bay filled the background, while a twenty-foot dark walnut conference table sat surrounded by sixteen leather chairs.
Jared stood at the head of the table, pacing nervously.
He was wearing his best navy charcoal suit, but his shirt collar looked slightly tight, and the dark circles under his eyes revealed he hadn't slept a wink in that three-star motel. Beside him stood Kiera, wearing an ill-fitting designer dress she had bought from a hotel boutique an hour earlier, her hands shaking as she arranged printed booklets on the table.
“Did you make sure the USB drive has the latest file version?” Jared snapped, his voice sharp and tense.
“Yes, Jared,” Kiera whimpered, backing away. “I loaded the file labeled Vanguard_Final_Presentation_V4. It was in your shared drive folder.”
“Good,” Jared muttered, smoothing his tie in his reflection on the glass wall. “Annalise thought she could sabotage us by staying away. She forgot that I’ve memorized the core talking points. Once Marcus Vance signs this contract, I will be named Senior Managing Partner by Friday. I don't need her. I never needed her.”
The heavy frosted glass doors of the boardroom swung open precisely at 8:55 AM.
Six executive board members of Apex Global walked into the room, led by Marcus Vance himself. Marcus was a sixty-year-old titan of industry, with silver hair, piercing blue eyes, and an aura of absolute power that made lesser men tremble.
Jared immediately put on his broad, charismatic salesman smile, stepping forward with an outstretched hand.
“Mr. Vance! What an absolute honor to see you again,” Jared beamed, bowing slightly as he shook Marcus’s hand. “Allow me to introduce my primary associate for this venture, Miss Kiera Vance—no relation to you, of course, though perhaps a good omen!”
Kiera gave a clumsy bow, giggling nervously. “It’s a pleasure, Mr. Vance.”
Marcus Vance offered a polite, distant nod, his sharp eyes scanning the room before settling on Jared.
“Where is Senior Director Annalise Keating, Mr. Sterling?” Marcus asked, his tone deadpan and impossible to read. “Her name is listed as the principal architect on every preliminary document submitted to our board.”
Jared dismissed the question with a smooth wave of his hand.
“Ah, Annalise... unfortunately, Ms. Keating had a sudden personal emergency back in Atlanta,” Jared lied smoothly, without blinking an eye. “She felt... overwhelmed by the pressure of this project and requested to step back. But rest assured, Mr. Vance, I have personally overseen every single detail of Project Vanguard. In fact, Miss Vance and I will be delivering the master proposal today.”
Marcus took his seat at the head of the table, folding his hands together.
“Is that so?” Marcus murmured. “Overwhelmed by pressure. That doesn't sound like the Annalise Keating I know.”
“Well, you know how women can get under high-stress conditions, sir,” Jared chuckled, offering a conspiratorial wink to the male executives at the table.
None of the executives laughed. A cold, heavy stillness settled over the room.
Jared cleared his throat nervously, picking up the presentation clicker.
“Let us begin,” Jared declared, aiming the clicker at the massive 100-inch 8K screen at the front of the room. “Gentlemen, today I present to you the future of automated enterprise logistics: Project Vanguard.”
He clicked the button.
Slide 1 appeared. It was a beautiful, sleek cover slide bearing the Sterling & Associates logo and Jared’s name in bold gold letters.
“As you can see,” Jared began, regaining his stride, walking back and forth along the glass wall, “our proprietary infrastructure integrates real-time predictive analytics with secure cloud routing, ensuring a thirty percent reduction in operational overhead within the first fiscal quarter.”
He clicked to Slide 2.
Slide 2: ARCHITECTURAL OVERVIEW & ENCRYPTION PROTOCOLS.
Jared smiled. This was his favorite part of the pitch. “The core of Vanguard lies in our custom dual-node encryption algorithm—”
Jared froze.
The bullet points on the slide were gone.
In their place sat a giant red box with white bold text that read:
[RESTRICTED ACCESS: THIS FILE CONTAINS PROPRIETARY INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY REGISTERED UNDER PATENT #US-2024-009182 HELD EXCLUSIVELY BY ANNALISE KEATING. AUTHORIZATION CREDENTIALS REQUIRED.]
Jared’s mouth went dry. His finger twitched on the clicker. He frantically jammed the forward button.
Slide 3 appeared.
[ACCESS DENIED: DATA ENCRYPTION KEY REVOKED BY SYSTEM ADMINISTRATOR AT 06:00 AM EST.]
Slide 4 appeared.
[WARNING: UNAUTHORIZED COMMERCIAL DISPLAY OF COPYRIGHTED CODE DETECTED. ALL AUDIENCE SESSION ACTIVITY IS CURRENTLY BEING RECORDED FOR LEGAL AUDIT.]
A collective gasp rippled through the Apex Global board members.
Jared’s forehead broke out into a sudden, frantic sweat. Panic seized his lungs. He spun around to look at Kiera, his eyes wide with horror.
“Kiera!” Jared hissed in a harsh, desperate whisper. “What did you do to the file? Which drive did you copy this from?”
“I... I copied the file from the shared folder like you told me!” Kiera whimpered, backing away as the board members began whispering among themselves. “I didn't touch anything else!”
“Fix it!” Jared screamed, throwing the clicker onto the walnut table. “Fix it right now!”
“Is there a problem with your proposal, Mr. Sterling?” Marcus Vance asked softly, leaning back in his leather chair, his voice dripping with icy amusement.
“No! No problem at all, Mr. Vance!” Jared stammered, wiping the sweat from his brow with his sleeve. “Just a tiny technical glitch! A software compatibility issue! I can present the technical specifications orally! I know the data by heart!”
Jared stepped forward, raising his hands dramatically.
“The algorithm... the algorithm utilizes a multi-threaded matrix system that... that routes data packets through—”

“Through a secondary firewall structure?” a voice asked softly from the back of the room.
The heavy glass doors of the boardroom swung open once again.
