Chapter 6 - The Fall of the Empire"Officer," Eleanor said, turning to Deputy Davis. "Please execute the service."

Officer Davis pulled a white legal packet from his clip board and stepped down the porch stairs, holding it out to Brandon.
"Brandon Vance, you are hereby served with a petition for absolute divorce, a temporary restraining order, and a summons for emergency court proceedings regarding grand larceny and fraud," Officer Davis announced clearly.
Brandon looked at the papers as if they were poisonous. "I'm not taking that."
"If you refuse service, it will be logged on camera, and a warrant will be issued for your immediate arrest," Officer Davis warned coldly.
With trembling hands, Brandon took the packet.
"Now," Officer Davis continued, pointing toward the driveway. "You have ten minutes to take your personal SUV off this property. Any attempt to re-enter this lawn will result in your immediate arrest for criminal trespass."
"Where am I supposed to go?!" Brandon shouted, his voice cracking with humiliation as several neighbors stood on their porches across the street, watching the entire scene unfold. "My cards are frozen! I don't have a place to stay!"
"Figure it out," I whispered, repeating the exact words he had spoken to me on the phone twenty-four hours earlier.
I turned around, walked back into my warm, beautifully lit foyer, and closed the heavy oak door. The heavy mechanical deadbolts slid into place with a sharp, final click.
Through the side window, I watched as Brandon and Evelyn stood on the driveway in utter disgrace.
With no money, no access to the house, and their reputation destroyed in front of the entire neighborhood, Brandon was forced to drive his SUV out of the cul-de-sac.
Over the next six weeks, the dominoes fell with terrifying speed.
The forensic financial audit revealed that Brandon had been embezzling money from his corporate firm to cover his mounting personal gambling debts—debts he had hidden from me throughout our entire marriage. Facing federal fraud charges, his employer formally terminated his contract and filed a police report.
Evelyn, desperate to avoid being named as an accomplice in the civil larceny suit, turned on her own son, returning forty thousand dollars of the stolen trust money to my legal team in exchange for being dropped from the lawsuit. The betrayal shattered whatever relationship Brandon had left with his mother.

Stripped of his job, his luxury lifestyle, his car, and his reputation, Brandon was forced to move into a tiny, run-down one-bedroom apartment on the outskirts of the city, working a minimum-wage job while awaiting his criminal fraud trial.
The court granted me sole legal and physical custody of Lily, with Brandon allowed only limited, supervised visitation at a court-designated facility—visitation he rarely attended because he couldn't face the reality of what he had lost.
