Chapter 2 - The Freezing VaultBy mid-morning, the illusion that I was still a titan of industry shattered completely.

I drove my Mercedes into downtown Manhattan, my tires kicking up grey slush against the towering glass facade of Blackwood Enterprises. The building looked as imposing as ever, its forty stories piercing the overcast winter sky like a monument to my ambition.

I swiped my executive access card at the private parking garage gate.

BEEP.

Red light flashed.

ACCESS DENIED – SECURITY LEVEL ZERO.

I stared at the glowing red screen in disbelief. I slammed my palm against the horn, leaning out the window. "Open the gate! Do you know who I am? I am the CEO!"

A security guard stepped out of the glass booth, looking distinctly uncomfortable. He approached my window cautiously. "Mr. Blackwood... I’m sorry, sir. Orders came down from the board of directors at 8:00 AM this morning. Your biometric access has been permanently revoked, and your corporate credit cards have been deactivated."

"The board?" I laughed bitterly, the sound harsh and frantic. "I am the board! I own seventy percent of the voting shares!"

"Not anymore, sir," the guard said quietly, handing me a small yellow sticky note. "You’re supposed to call this number. It’s corporate legal counsel."

I snatched the note, threw the car in reverse, and sped out of the garage, nearly clipping a concrete pillar. I pulled over illegally in a red zone, punched the number into my phone, and waited as it rang.

"Blackwood Enterprises legal department," a crisp, unfamiliar voice answered. "This is Director Vance speaking."

"Vance! What the hell is going on?!" I roared, gripping the steering wheel so hard my knuckles turned white. "Some rent-a-cop just locked me out of my own building! Explain yourself right now or I’ll have your license!"

Director Vance sighed, sounding as though he were reading a menu rather than dismantling my life’s work. "Mr. Blackwood, calm down. As of 7:30 AM, Bellamy Holdings executed a hostile takeover of Blackwood Enterprises, exercising a controlling voting block acquired through a series of phased equity transfers dating back over three years."

My breath hitched. "Bellamy Holdings? That’s impossible! Bellamy is an institutional fund based in Zurich! They don't invest in regional real estate contractors!"

"They do now," Vance replied smoothly. "Furthermore, they appointed a new principal chairwoman to oversee the complete restructuring and audit of the firm. All executive salaries, company-owned vehicles, and discretionary funds are frozen pending the federal fraud investigation."

"Who?" I screamed, my voice cracking with desperation. "Who is the chairwoman?!"

"Her name is Elena Bellamy-Blackwood," Vance said, dropping the name like a tactical bomb. "Or, as you likely knew her, your wife."

The phone slipped from my sweaty palm, clattering onto the rubber floor mat of the car.

Elena Bellamy.

Not an orphan from a small-town art school. Not a helpless dependent looking for a savior. The Bellamy name—the legendary global shipping and industrial syndicate that dominated international markets—belonged to her.

For five years, she had watched me strut around our home like a king, boasting about my business acumen, hiding my affairs, and treating her like a glorified maid, all while she sat quietly on a multi-billion-dollar pedigree, playing a long game I was too arrogant to see.

My vision blurred. The towering glass skyscraper across the street suddenly looked less like a monument to my success and more like a towering tombstone with my name carved into the granite.

If Elena controlled Bellamy Holdings, then she didn't just take my company.

She owned me, down to the very air I breathed.
