Chapter 3 - The Broken MatriarchBy 2:00 p.m., the Christmas dinner at the Vance mansion had collapsed into utter ruin. The guests had fled in awkward embarrassment, leaving only Nathan, Margaret, Richard, and my legal team in the grand living room.

Outside, the snow was falling heavily, painting the pine trees white. Inside, the fire crackled, but the room felt colder than a morgue.

Margaret sat on a plush velvet sofa, holding a cup of tea with hands that shook so violently the porcelain rattled against the saucer.

"Claire..." Margaret pleaded, her arrogant, elitist tone completely gone, replaced by the raspy voice of a desperate old woman. "Please... think about the family name. The Vance name has been respected in Colorado for fifty years! You were once part of this family!"

"I was part of this family when I spent three weeks in the hospital with severe hyperemesis during my first trimester," I reminded her, sitting gracefully in an armchair across from her. "And do you remember what you did, Margaret? You sent your butler to my hospital room with a manila envelope containing divorce papers and a check for twenty thousand dollars, telling me to stop pretending I was carrying a Vance heir."

Margaret winced, looking away in shame. "I... I thought you were lying! Nathan told me—"

"Nathan told you what was convenient for him!" I snapped, my eyes flashing with a spark of long-buried anger. "And you swallowed it because I was a schoolteacher's daughter from Texas, not some socialite heiress like Brooke!"

Richard stepped between us, holding up his hands in a gesture of peace. "Claire, please. Let's talk business. What do you want? If you accelerate the debt notes, Vance Logistics will go into receivership. Hundreds of people will lose their jobs! My family will be bankrupt!"

"I don't want your family bankrupt, Richard," I said, setting my teacup down. "I am a businesswoman, not a tyrant. I have no interest in ruining innocent employees."

Nathan looked up from the corner where he sat slumped in a chair, a faint glimmer of hope returning to his hollow eyes. "Claire... you'll give us a chance to restructure?"

"I will," I nodded. "Under three non-negotiable conditions."

"Anything," Nathan said instantly, leaning forward. "Name anything!"

"Condition one," I began, pointing at Richard. "Richard takes over as CEO of Vance Logistics effective immediately. Nathan is stripped of all executive authority, voting rights, and corporate salary. He will hold zero power in the company."

Nathan gasped as if he had been punched in the ribs. "Claire! That's my life's work! I built the expansion branches!"

"You almost bankrupted the expansion branches through gross negligence and luxury spending," I countered flatly, pulling out a financial audit. "Condition two: Margaret surrenders her thirty percent equity stake in the firm directly to a trust established for Noah, Ethan, Sophie, and Grace."

Margaret opened her mouth to protest, but Richard shot her a fierce, warning glare that forced her to swallow her words. "Agreed," Richard said firmly. "What is condition three?"

I looked directly at Nathan, my eyes narrowing.

"Condition three: Nathan signs a full, legally binding surrender of all parental claims and agrees never to contact my children without my explicit, written permission."
