Chapter 4 - THE LOCKOUTWhen you take away a man's unearned luxury, you don't just break his bank account—you reveal his character.

By one o'clock that afternoon, the temperature outside the Gold Coast townhouse had dropped to twenty-two degrees.

A black Mercedes van was parked along the curb. Two men in dark blue work uniforms were standing on the stone front steps, quiet and methodical, using electronic calibration tools to remove the brass keypad lock from the heavy double front doors.

Carlson’s sports car screeched to a halt behind the van, mounting the curb slightly in his hurry.

He bolted out of the vehicle, his coat flying open, his face red from the cold and sheer, unadulterated panic. Emily followed closely behind him, clutching her designer handbag like a shield.

"Hey!" Carlson yelled, marching up the stairs toward the locksmiths. "What the hell do you think you’re doing?! This is my private residence! Stop touching that door!"

One of the locksmiths—a tall man with a clipboard—didn't even look up. He stepped aside, allowing a sharp-looking woman in a charcoal wool coat to step forward from the shadows of the vestibule.

It was Sarah Lin.

"Mr. Graham," Sarah said, her voice smooth and entirely unbothered by his shouting. "Good afternoon."

"Who the hell are you?!" Carlson demanded, reaching for the door handle. "Get these workers off my porch before I call the police!"

"You're welcome to call the police, Mr. Graham," Sarah replied, pulling a laminated document from her leather portfolio. "However, the police will simply enforce this Emergency Order of Possession issued by the Cook County Chancery Division two hours ago."

Carlson snatched the document from her hand. His eyes darted across the official court seal, the judge’s signature, and the bold title: IMMEDIATE WRIT OF RECOVERY - GRAHAM RESIDENTIAL HOLDINGS.

"This townhouse is owned by Graham Development!" Carlson spat, his voice trembling with fury.

"Correction," Sarah said evenly. "It was owned by Graham Residential Assets LLC, a entity whose equity was fully pledged to Aegis Capital Trust. Following this morning’s default notice, Aegis has exercised its contractual right to take direct physical control of all pledged real estate."

"This is Bridget," Carlson rasped, his eyes bulging as he stepped closer to Sarah. "This is her petty little revenge because I broke up with her last night! Tell her to come down here and talk to me face-to-face! Tell her to stop hiding behind lawyers!"

Sarah didn't flinch. She adjusted her glasses, looking at Carlson with the cool curiosity one might reserve for an insect under a microscope.

"Ms. Vance is not hiding, Mr. Graham," Sarah said. "She is currently presiding over an emergency board meeting of Aegis Capital Trust's acquisition committee. She is far too busy to attend to your personal drama."

Emily stepped forward, her pale face tight with indignation. "This is illegal! You can't just throw someone out of their home without thirty days' notice! Carlson’s clothes, his watch collection, his documents are all inside!"

Sarah pointed toward the sidewalk.

Carlson turned.

Parked three yards behind his sports car was a commercial moving truck. Two men in grey jumpsuits were neatly stacking ten large, heavy-duty cardboard boxes onto a wooden pallet.

"Your personal effects have been carefully packed by bonded professionals, Mr. Graham," Sarah explained, her voice devoid of emotion. "Your watches, your clothing, your golf clubs, and your personal laptops are in boxes one through seven. Boxes eight through ten contain your shoes. You have thirty minutes to load them into your vehicle before we tow any unauthorized cars from the driveway."

"My watches..." Carlson choked out, taking a step toward the boxes. "My Patek Philippe... my father gave me that..."

"Purchased with a corporate expense account from Graham Development in 2022," Sarah noted crisply, checking her tablet. "Which means it technically belongs to the primary creditor now. But Ms. Vance was generous enough to instruct us not to contest your personal jewelry. Consider it a gift."

Carlson turned back to the front door.

The locksmiths were already finished. The old brass keypad had been replaced with a sleek, black digital lock that hummed softly as it engaged its internal deadbolts.

CLICK.

The sound was small, but in the freezing winter air, it hit Carlson like a physical blow.

He stepped up to the door, placing his palms against the frosted glass, looking into the warm, elegant foyer where I had hung my coat every evening for three years. He could see the marble table where his mother’s flower arrangements used to sit, the hardwood floors I had paid to restore, the quiet, beautiful sanctuary he had taken for granted.

He was locked out.

Not just from the house.

From the entire life he had assumed was his birthright.

"Where is she?" Carlson asked, his voice suddenly dropping into a hollow, broken whisper. He turned to Sarah Lin, his arrogance entirely drained, leaving behind only the desperate confusion of a child whose toys had been confiscated. "Where is Bridget?"

"Ms. Vance is where she has always been, Mr. Graham," Sarah said, picking up her leather bag and stepping past him down the stairs. "Running the world while you were busy playing king."
