Chapter 3 - The Carter LegacyRobert Carter’s presence in the boardroom sucked all the remaining oxygen out of the room.

He didn't look at Nathan. He didn't look at Madison. His sharp, steel-gray eyes locked entirely onto me, scanning me from head to toe with a mixture of fierce paternal protectiveness and immense pride.

"Are you alright, sweetheart?" my father asked, his voice softening as he stepped past the security guards and placed a warm hand on my shoulder.

"I'm fine, Dad," I replied, leaning into his touch for a brief second. "Just finishing up some overdue paperwork."

Nathan staggered backward, his knees finally buckling as he collapsed into his executive chair. He looked at my father, then back at me, the final pieces of the puzzle violently snapping together in his mind.

"Robert Carter..." Nathan whispered, the name tasting like ash in his mouth. "You're... you're Robert Carter? The founder of Carter Global Tech? The venture capitalist who bought out half the Silicon Valley infrastructure in the nineties?"

My father turned his gaze slowly toward Nathan, his expression as cold and unforgiving as a block of winter ice.

"The very same, Mr. Pierce," my father said smoothly, walking over to the mahogany table and picking up the divorce papers I had just signed. "For the past two years, I have watched my daughter humble herself to support your ambitions. I watched you leave her alone in that massive penthouse while you entertained your little corporate mistresses. I bit my tongue because Emma asked me to give your marriage a chance to grow organically."

My father slammed the papers down onto the desk with a sharp crack.

"And this is how you repay her loyalty? By handing her a black American Express card like she’s a stray dog you’re kicking out into the rain, telling her to take her old Honda and disappear?"

Nathan shrank back into his seat, unable to meet my father's piercing gaze. "I... I didn't know. She never told me who her family was!"

"Of course she didn't," my father snapped. "Because she wanted to be loved for who she was, not what name she carried. A luxury you were too blinded by your own narcissism and greed to appreciate."

Mr. Henderson calmly closed his leather portfolio, sliding the brass seal back into its velvet compartment. "The corporate dissolution is officially registered, Mr. Carter. Aegis Holdings has exercised its reversionary clause. All server access, proprietary algorithms, and trademarked branding associated with CloudAxis are now locked out under federal digital asset protection protocols."

As if on cue, the massive floor-to-ceiling digital display screens mounted on the boardroom walls suddenly flickered.

The sleek, glowing blue logo of CloudAxis vanished in a single frame.

In its place, a stark, crimson warning banner flashed across every monitor in the building:

SYSTEM ALERT: INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS REVOKED. ASSET FREEZE IN EFFECT PENDING AUDIT BY AEGIS HOLDINGS.

Across the building, down on the trading floor and in the engineering labs, software systems locked down instantly. Fourteen floors below, the frantic panic of hundreds of employees losing server connection began as a distant murmur that rose like a tidal wave against the glass.

Madison shrieked, covering her face with her hands as her phone buzzed incessantly with emergency notifications from the company's chief technology officer.

"Nathan! Look at the servers!" Madison cried out, her voice cracking with hysteria. "The entire platform is dead! The investors are calling! The board is demanding an emergency conference call!"

Nathan didn't move. He sat frozen in his chair, staring at the blank screens, realizing that in less than twenty minutes, he had gone from a multi-million-dollar tech CEO to a penniless fraud facing imminent corporate lawsuits.

My father looked down at Nathan with absolute contempt.

"Pack your things, Mr. Pierce," my father said quietly. "You have thirty minutes to clear out your desk before security escorts you out of the building. And don't bother looking for a lawyer who will take your case against Aegis Holdings. You can't afford the retainer—especially since the black credit card you tossed at my daughter has just been remotely deactivated."
