Chapter 6 - Checkmate in the BoardroomThe executive boardroom on the forty-fifth floor of Colenet Headquarters looked like a Roman colosseum waiting for the gladiators to enter.

At 7:55 AM, the massive mahogany doors opened, and the twelve members of the board of directors filed in, whispering nervously among themselves. Word had already leaked through financial news terminals that an emergency shareholder restructuring vote had been abruptly called by senior leadership.
Arthur Sterling sat near the head of the table. He wore a bespoke charcoal suit, his silver hair impeccably combed, a smug, untouchable grin plastered across his face. He looked like a man who believed he had already won the war.
I walked into the room at exactly 7:59 AM.
I wasn't alone. Walking right beside me, dressed in a stunning, razor-sharp white Dior pantsuit with her brown hair styled in sleek waves, was Claire.
A collective gasp echoed around the boardroom table.
Several board members dropped their pens. Arthur’s smug grin instantly vanished, replaced by a flash of genuine, unadulterated shock as he stared at the woman he thought he had successfully buried in the slums of Cleveland.
"Good morning, everyone," I said smoothly, pulling out the chair at the absolute head of the table—the seat traditionally reserved for the CEO and majority stakeholder—and seating Claire comfortably before taking my place standing right behind her.
Arthur scrambled to his feet, his face flushing a mottled crimson. "What is the meaning of this?! Who authorized outsiders to enter a secure executive session? Security, remove—"
"Sit down, Arthur," a cold, authoritative voice interrupted from the doorway.
Two men in sharp dark suits stepped into the boardroom, flashing federal badges that gleamed under the recessed ceiling lights.
"Special Agent Vance, FBI Financial Crimes Division," the lead agent announced, stepping up to the edge of the table and placing a thick sheaf of federal arrest warrants right in front of Arthur's trembling hands. "Arthur Sterling, you are under arrest for wire fraud, industrial espionage, extortion, and the illegal manipulation of corporate securities."
The room erupted into absolute chaos.
Directors stood up, shouting over one another. Faces turned pale. Papers flew across the mahogany table.
"This is an outrage!" Arthur shrieked, his voice cracking as he pointed a shaking finger at me. "Cole fabricated these charges! He's using his wealth to crush opposition! Look at him! He's hiding his illegitimate family, dragging a random woman off the street to—"
"She isn't a random woman, Arthur," I interrupted, my voice cutting through the noise like a thunderclap.
I leaned forward, resting my palms flat on the table, staring down my former second-in-command with a gaze so cold it made the air in the room feel glacial.
"That is Claire Parker-Cole," I said clearly, enunciating every syllable. "My legal wife, the mother of my twin sons, and the rightful holder of twenty percent voting equity in this corporation—equity that your own internal emails prove you tried to steal through manufactured poverty and psychological coercion."
I slid a second document across the table—a signed, notarized confession from Arthur’s personal secretary, detailing every dollar of Swiss slush-fund money used to track Claire and orchestrate the staged setup.
Arthur stared down at the document, his knees buckling beneath him. He grabbed the edge of the chair, his breath coming in short, ragged gasps, realizing that every trap he had laid for me had just snapped shut around his own neck.
"Take him away," Agent Vance commanded quietly.
Two federal agents stepped forward, grabbing Arthur firmly by both arms and hauling him toward the exit as he began to sputter frantic, incoherent denials. As the heavy mahogany doors closed behind him, slamming shut with a finality that echoed through the entire floor, an absolute, profound silence settled over the boardroom.

I looked around the table at the remaining board members, whose faces were pale with terror and compliance.
"The meeting is adjourned," I said quietly.
