Chapter 5 - The Mastermind EmergesThe heavy steel door of the panic suite hissed as its hydraulic seals locked into place, completely silencing the deafening gunfire outside. Inside, the emergency LED strips cast a sterile, clinical white glow over the compact, high-tech sanctuary.

Ethan was crying softly, curled up in a corner on a padded bench while the terrified housekeeper stroked his hair, murmuring gentle comforts. William stood before the master control console, his fingers flying across the touchscreens as he monitored the estate’s internal security feeds.
“They breached the library,” William said, his voice tight and breathless as he watched the infrared camera footage. Two more tactical operatives were swarming the room, inspecting the unconscious bodies of their comrades. But they weren't trying to breach our vault—they were planting heavy breaching charges against the outer structural columns of the library wing.
“They’re not trying to open the door,” I said, stepping up beside him and staring at the screen. “They’re going to bring the entire east wing down on top of us.”
William’s fingers froze on the glass console. “If they collapse the east wing, the panic room’s structural integrity will hold, but the ventilation shafts will crush. We’ll be buried alive under tons of stone and concrete with no way out.”
“Is there an emergency egress?” I asked, scanning the technical schematic displayed on the side monitor.
“Yes,” William pointed to a glowing blue line snaking away from the panic suite. “An old utility tunnel installed during the Cold War. It leads out past the perimeter wall into the old carriage house three hundred yards away. But the access hatch requires a manual override from the main security server room downstairs.”
The server room. Right in the belly of the mansion, surrounded by whatever mercenaries hadn't made it up to the second floor yet.
“I’ll go,” I said without missing a beat.
William looked up, his eyes wide with astonishment. “Are you out of your mind? There are at least half a dozen armed men down there.”
“If you go, who stays to protect Ethan if they somehow breach this room?” I argued calmly, holding his gaze. “You know the estate layout better than anyone, but I have tactical training. Give me the bypass codes, your handheld radio, and ten minutes.”
William stared at me for a long, agonizing second. Then, slowly, he nodded. He reached into his pocket, pulled out a master keycard and a cryptographic thumb drive, and pressed them firmly into my hand.
“Don't you dare die in my house, Julian,” William said roughly, his voice thick with emotion. “Bring my family out of this nightmare.”
I tapped the keypad beside the panic room’s emergency release hatch. With a soft pneumatic hiss, a small maintenance crawlspace slid open, leading directly into the darkened ventilation ducts behind the walls.
I slipped inside, pulling the access panel closed behind me. The crawlspace was pitch black, narrow, and smelled heavily of old dust and copper wiring. Using the faint green glow of my watch, I began crawling downward through the metallic maze toward the heart of the mansion.
After what felt like an eternity, I reached the service grille overlooking the main security control center on the ground floor.
I peered through the metal slats. The room was illuminated by the blue glow of dozens of monitors. Standing in the center of the room, leaning casually against the main control console, was a tall, impeccably dressed man in a tailored charcoal suit. He wasn't wearing tactical gear like the mercenaries outside; he looked like a Wall Street executive attending a high-stakes board meeting.
He held a secure satellite phone to his ear, speaking in a calm, chillingly polite voice.
“Yes, boss,” the man said smoothly. “The collateral is being handled. Sterling’s assets will be frozen by morning under emergency receivership protocols. The estate will be ours before the authorities even realize what hit them.”

The trap was fully laid. And I had the master key right in my hand.
