Chapter 4 - THE COUNTER OFFENSIVEBy sunrise the next morning, the story had obliterated every news outlet across the country.

“THE GALA OF GREED: MILLIONAIRE AND MISTRESS ARRESTED IN $68M POISON PLOT” read the front-page headline of the Wall Street Journal.
Front-page photos of Brenda in tears, wearing my stolen gown while handcuffed, were plastered across every major social media platform. Video clips of Luke revealing the hidden ledgers on the 50-foot screen had already garnered over forty million views on TikTok and X within eight hours.
I sat in the formal study of our family estate, sipping a cup of hot black tea.
The estate felt different today. The dark, oppressive air of suspicion that had hovered over the house for the past two years was gone, replaced by the crisp, clean light of the morning sun streaming through the floor-to-ceiling windows.
Luke sat across from me at the massive mahogany desk, two laptops open in front of him, his fingers flying across the keyboards.
“Dad’s legal team tried to file an emergency bail application at 6:00 AM,” Luke reported, without looking up from his screen. “The judge denied it without bail, citing flight risk and severity of charges.”
“And Brenda?” I asked.
“Her private attorney abandoned her three hours ago after discovering her bank accounts were frozen by the federal freeze order I triggered last night,” Luke replied, a slight smirk touching his lips. “She’s currently assigned a public defender.”
A soft knock at the door interrupted us.
Mrs. Higgins stepped in, carrying a silver tray with a fresh stack of legal documents.
“Mrs. Albright,” Mrs. Higgins said, her face brighter than I had seen it in years. “Mr. Harrison is here to see you.”
Arthur Harrison walked in behind her. He was my father’s lifelong corporate attorney—a sharp, white-haired veteran of the legal world who had managed our family’s trust for over thirty years until Christopher had forcibly sidelined him eighteen months ago.
“Eleanor, my dear,” Arthur said, stepping forward to give my hand a warm, reassuring squeeze. “What a spectacular show you and young Luke put on last night.”
“It wasn't a show, Arthur,” I said softly, setting my teacup down. “It was survival.”
“And a masterpiece of survival it was,” Arthur agreed, sitting down in the leather armchair beside the desk. “I’ve spent the last six hours going through the evidence container Luke released to the Department of Justice. The sheer scale of Christopher’s betrayal is staggering, Eleanor.”
Arthur pulled a red folder from his leather briefcase and laid it on the table.
“Christopher didn't just try to steal your $68 million trust,” Arthur explained, his expression turning grave. “He was using Albright Global as a front to cover over $120 million in personal debt he accumulated through failed cryptocurrency speculation and high-stakes gambling syndicates in Macau.”
I froze. “One hundred and twenty million?”
“Yes,” Arthur nodded. “He was drowning. His plan was to secure full legal guardianship over you, liquidate your family’s hereditary real estate holdings, pay off his gambling debts, and flee to a non-extradition country with Brenda before the board realized the company was hollowed out.”
I leaned back in my chair, taking a deep breath. The full gravity of what Luke and I had escaped hit me like a cold wave. If Luke hadn't stepped in, I would currently be locked in a private psychiatric facility, stripped of my assets, while Christopher and Brenda lived on my father’s hard-earned legacy halfway across the world.
“Where do we stand with the company, Arthur?” I asked, my voice hardening.
“As of 8:00 AM, the Board of Directors of Albright Global held an emergency meeting,” Arthur said with a triumphant smile. “They voted unanimously to strip Christopher of his CEO position and his seat on the board. Furthermore, under section 14 of the original company charter—which your father wrote—if a sitting CEO is indicted on felony charges involving corporate assets, the majority voting shares automatically revert to the chief hereditary beneficiary.”
Arthur slid a thick document across the desk toward me, along with a sleek black pen.
“Which means, Eleanor... you are now the majority owner and interim CEO of Albright Global.”
I stared at the document.
For twenty years, I had stayed in the background. I had stepped down from active management to support Christopher’s career, to raise Luke, and to maintain a quiet life. I had allowed Christopher to take the spotlight while I managed our home and charity foundations.
And he had taken that devotion and used it to try to erase me.
I looked at Luke. My son smiled at me, giving me a silent nod of absolute faith.
I picked up the pen and signed my name on the dotted line with sharp, decisive strokes.
Eleanor Vance Albright.
“Now, Arthur,” I said, handing the document back to him. “Let’s talk about the counter-offensive.”
“What are your orders, Madam CEO?” Arthur asked, his eyes gleaming with excitement.
“First,” I said, leaning forward on the desk. “I want every asset Christopher and Brenda ever touched impounded. Their luxury vehicles, their private club memberships, their offshore accounts, and every piece of designer clothing Brenda bought with my trust money.”
“Consider it done.”
“Second,” I continued, turning to Luke. “I want the full digital forensic audit of Brenda’s personal communications made public to the district attorney.”
“Already done, Mom,” Luke said with a grin. “I found text messages between Brenda and her sister from four months ago where she explicitly outlines her plan to ‘replace the old woman and take the mansion.’ The DA just added premeditated attempted murder to her charge sheet.”
“And third,” I said, standing up and walking toward the grand window overlooking the estate grounds. “I want to call an emergency press conference at Albright Global headquarters at two o’clock today.”
“What will be the topic of the press conference, Eleanor?” Arthur asked.
May you like
I turned back to look at them, a serene, powerful smile gracing my face.
“The total liquidation of Christopher Albright’s remaining personal shares... and the rebirth of Vance Holdings.”
