Chapter 4 - The Corporate ExecutionTwo weeks later, Elena was discharged from St. Catherine's and brought back to a heavily fortified penthouse in Tribeca, where a team of private nutritionists, private security guards, and top-tier obstetricians hovered over her recovery around the clock.

I hadn't slept more than four hours a night since she came home. I watched her every breath, ensured every meal was tested in a portable lab kit before she touched it, and systematically dismantled every business associate, board member, and political ally who had ever associated with my sister or the syndicate that threatened us.
Today was the emergency board meeting of Mercer Global Enterprises.
I sat at the head of the massive obsidian conference table on the fiftieth floor. The floor-to-ceiling windows overlooked a gray, rain-swept Manhattan skyline. Around the table sat the remaining senior executives, minority stakeholders, and legal counsel.
Julianna’s empty chair sat midway down the table, draped in corporate disgrace. Following her arrest and indictment for attempted poisoning, financial fraud, and conspiracy, her voting shares had been frozen by federal injunction and absorbed back into my primary holding portfolio.
"Mr. Mercer," our chief legal counsel, Marcus Vance, began, sliding a leather-bound folder across the table. "The federal indictment against your sister has been officially sealed by the district attorney. Furthermore, our counter-intelligence division has traced the syndicate that originally threatened your family three months ago. The orchestrator wasn't an external cartel—it was an internal coup coordinated by Vanguard Holdings, leveraging Julianna's insider access to destabilize your personal life and force a hostile takeover of our logistics division."
I listened in absolute silence, my fingers steepened under my chin, my expression carved from granite.
"Vanguard Holdings," I repeated slowly. "Led by Arthur Sterling."
"Yes, sir," Marcus nodded. "Arthur Sterling was counting on you being emotionally compromised by your divorce from Mrs. Mercer. He thought isolating you would make you vulnerable to a forced stock dilution."
"Arthur made a fundamental miscalculation," I said, my voice cutting through the quiet boardroom like frozen steel. "He thought my marriage was a weakness. He didn't realize it was the only real foundation I had."
I stood up, buttoning the front of my tailored charcoal suit.
"Here are my instructions for today, Marcus," I said, leaning over the table. "First, initiate an immediate hostile counter-acquisition of Vanguard Holdings. Buy up every available share on the open market starting at nine-thirty this morning. Empty our secondary liquidity reserves if you have to. I want Arthur Sterling begging for mercy by close of business."

"And second?" Marcus asked, his eyes widening slightly at the sheer scale of the financial retaliation.
"Second," I said, walking toward the private elevator that led straight down to the penthouse residence where Elena was resting. "Prepare a formal press release announcing my reinstatement of full marital rights, the expansion of the Mercer family trust in honor of my expected child, and the permanent ban of any individual bearing the surname Sterling or allied with Vanguard from ever setting foot in a Mercer property again."
