Chapter 3 - The Party’s OverThe Miami sun was shining brilliantly through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the penthouse suite at the Grand Ocean Breeze Resort in South Beach. Outside, palm trees swayed gently in the tropical breeze, and the turquoise waters of the Atlantic glittered under a cloudless morning sky.

Inside Suite 1402, the atmosphere was considerably less glamorous.
The suite smelled like stale champagne, expensive cologne, designer perfume, and the overwhelming headache of a massive hangover. Empty bottles of Dom Pérignon littered the mahogany coffee table beside silver trays of half-eaten room service breakfast.
Chloe was sprawled across the plush velvet sofa, still wearing a sequined party dress from the night before, snoring softly with her mouth open. Her husband, Mark, was sitting at the kitchen island, nursing a heavy glass of iced black coffee while scrolling lazily through his tablet, looking for luxury yacht rentals for the afternoon.
And Eleanor—my mother—was sitting regally in an armchair by the balcony doors, sipping a mimosa and looking entirely pleased with herself.
"I told you everything would be fine," Eleanor said, waving a manicured hand in the air as she addressed Ethan, who was lounging nearby. "David is a good boy. A bit melodramatic, yes, but he always caves. A few weeks of radio silence, and he'll be begging us to let him send more money."
"Are you sure he didn't check the bank account?" Ethan asked, furrowing his brow slightly. "I tried to use my card at the hotel boutique this morning to buy those sunglasses, and it was declined. Said 'Authorization Denied.'"
Eleanor scoffed, rolling her eyes. "Probably just a routine anti-fraud security hold because we’re out of state. David’s bank is notoriously fussy. Mark, honey, call the customer service line and tell them to lift the hold. Use David’s social security number; you have it in your notes."
Mark grunted, tapping his tablet. "On it. Let me just—"
Battering ram.
The heavy mahogany door of Suite 1402 didn't just open; it exploded inward with a deafening crash that shook the walls and rattled the crystal chandeliers.
"POLICE! DOWN ON THE FLOOR! NOBODY MOVE!"
Shouting voices filled the penthouse suite like a tidal wave. Four officers from the Miami-Dade Police Department, dressed in full tactical gear with ballistic vests and drawn sidearms, swarmed into the room in a fluid, terrifying display of tactical precision.
Chloe screamed at the top of her lungs, bolting upright from the sofa and nearly tripping over her own sequined hem.
Mark dropped his tablet, his face instantly turning the color of skim milk as a burly officer grabbed the back of his collar and slammed him face-first onto the kitchen counter, slapping steel handcuffs onto his wrists with a metallic click.
"What is the meaning of this?! Do you know who we are?!" Eleanor shrieked, standing up from her armchair and spilling her mimosa all over the white rug. "We are guests of this hotel! My son is a wealthy businessman! You can't treat us like criminals!"
"Sit down, ma'هم!" a female detective—coordinating with the New York task force—barked as she strode into the center of the suite, holding an arrest warrant clipboard.
Eleanor froze, her eyes widening as the detective stepped directly into her personal space.
"Eleanor Miller?" the detective asked coldly.
"Yes, but—"
"Eleanor Miller, you are under arrest for interstate financial fraud, conspiracy to commit grand larceny, and felony reckless endangerment of a minor and a dependent adult," the detective rattled off smoothly, her voice cutting through the hysterical whimpers of the family. "You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."
"This is insane! There's a mistake!" Chloe wailed as two officers pulled her arms behind her back, clicking handcuffs around her slender wrists. "Call David! Call my brother! He pays for everything! He'll have you all fired!"
"Oh, your brother is well aware," the detective said, a grim, satisfied smile touching the corners of her mouth. "In fact, it was your brother who sent us the security footage of you starving his wife and freezing his newborn son while you lived it up in this penthouse."
The color drained completely from Eleanor’s face. The haughty, untouchable matriarch mask melted away in an instant, replaced by a cold, trembling realization.
"David... sent you?" Eleanor whispered, her voice cracking.
"Every single second of it," the detective replied, turning to Mark, who was being hauled up from the counter. "You’re all being processed down at the local precinct, and then you’ll be extradited back to Brooklyn to face charges. Pack your bags, folks. Vacation's over."
As the officers hauled my family out of the penthouse suite in handcuffs—their designer clothes rumpled, their expensive sunglasses left behind on the floor, and their faces burning with public humiliation—the reality of what they had done finally caught up with them.
