Chapter 5 - The Web UnravelsSabrina backed away from the table, her composure completely shattered. The polished corporate persona dissolved in an instant, revealing the desperate, cornered grifter underneath.

"You don't understand, Christopher!" Sabrina shrieked, tears springing to her eyes as the board members stared in stunned disgust. "I had to do it! I needed financial security! When you told me Stephanie couldn't give you children, I thought... I thought if I gave you a family, you’d leave her, take control of Meridian, and we could build an empire together! The real father... it was just a college fling from before we moved into the city! I didn't know the DNA would show up like this!"
Christopher stared at her as if she were a stranger. The man who had strutted into the room ten minutes earlier, supremely confident in his dominance, looked as though his entire universe had evaporated.
"A fling?" Christopher repeated, his voice hollow. "You used me? You trapped me with another man's children, passed them off as my legacy, and had me humiliate my wife in our own home?"
"You were so easy to manipulate, Christopher!" Sabrina snapped back, hysteria finally cracking her voice. "You care about nothing except your stupid image and your father’s approval! Stephanie treated you like an equal, but you wanted someone to worship you. Well, I worshipped your wallet, not you!"
Penelope, who had slipped quietly into the back of the boardroom during the commotion, let out a piercing gasp and collapsed backward into a leather armchair, clutching her chest.
"My heart..." Penelope gasped, her eyes rolling back.
"Call an ambulance," I instructed the nearest vice president, who scrambled for his phone without hesitation.
I turned my attention back to Christopher, who sat paralyzed in his chair, surrounded by the wreckage of his own arrogance.
"You wanted to know why I didn't shed a single tear on Saturday night, Christopher?" I asked, stepping closer to him until I was looking down directly into his hollow eyes. "It wasn't because I was broken. It was because I already knew the ultimate truth about you."
Christopher looked up slowly. "What... what are you talking about?"
"You spent eight years blaming me for our childlessness," I said steadily. "You let your mother and your family treat me like a defective machine. You humiliated me at every holiday, every family gathering, every medical consultation. But you never once asked the one question a rational man would ask."
Christopher’s lips parted. "What question?"
"Why your fertility specialist called me into his private office nine years ago—two weeks before our wedding," I replied, my voice cutting through the silent room like a razor. "He didn't tell me you had low sperm count, Christopher. He told me you were completely, permanently sterile from your cancer treatments. You couldn't father a child if your life depended on it."
The silence in the boardroom became absolute. You could hear the hum of the overhead ventilation system and the distant sirens wailing up Woodward Avenue.
Christopher froze, every muscle in his body locking up as the horrifying realization crashed over him.
"Sterile..." Christopher whispered, the word tasting like poison on his tongue. "Before we... before we even married?"

"Your mother begged me to protect your fragile ego," I continued, my voice merciless in its clarity. "She swore that if you knew the truth, your depression would destroy you, your career would stall, and your relationship with your father’s legacy would collapse. So I took the bullet. I took the blame. I lived a lie for eight years to protect a man who turned out to be nothing more than a narcissistic fraud."
Christopher put his head in his hands, dry, agonizing sobs shaking his broad shoulders. All the wealth, all the corporate posturing, all the cruel superiority he had lorded over me for a decade had dissolved into ash. He was a man who had built a kingdom on a mountain of sand, and the tide had finally come in.
