Chapter 3 - The Panic Beneath the PolishWithin forty-eight hours, the machinery of Ethan Vance’s meticulously constructed public life began to wobble.

He didn't call the police. He couldn't. A public missing-person report on Maya Vance would immediately trigger investigative journalists to dig into his European itinerary, his private chartered flights with Chloe, and the sudden dissolution of a marriage that Wall Street and society columns regarded as bulletproof.
Instead, Ethan mobilized his private security team, deploying high-priced investigators across the tri-state area with strict instructions: find Maya, determine where she went, and bring her back before the media caught wind of the fracture.
He sat behind his desk at Vance Global headquarters on a rainy Tuesday morning, staring at his phone as if willing it to ring.
The door burst open without a knock.
Chloe Ward strode into the office. She wore an ivory wool trench coat, her blonde hair perfectly blown out, smelling of the exact same French perfume that had clung to Ethan’s tuxedo jacket in Zurich.
“Ethan, what is going on?” Chloe demanded, dropping her leather handbag onto the corner of his desk. “My assistant tried to book our usual weekend reservation at the Hamptons estate, and the property manager told her our access codes have been revoked by the corporate trust! Furthermore, your PR team is in full meltdown because rumors are leaking that Maya hasn't been seen at the foundation office in a week.”
Ethan didn't look up from his monitor. His eyes were bloodshot, dark circles framing his gaze like bruises. He hadn't slept in three days. Every time he closed his eyes, he saw the empty hangers in the closet and the porcelain vase sitting alone on his desk.
“Keep your voice down, Chloe,” Ethan said, his voice dangerously low.
“Keep my voice down?” Chloe scoffed, crossing her arms. “We spent ten days planning our next steps assuming your quiet little wife was just a minor administrative hurdle! You assured me she was entirely dependent on you—that she had no independent career, no separate bank accounts, no social circle outside of your orbit!”
“She didn't have any of those things,” Ethan snapped, finally slamming his hands down on the desk and standing up. “When I met her at Columbia, she was a broke graduate student living off a fellowship stipend and public transit! She had nothing!”
“Well, she clearly has something now, because according to your own security idiots, her passport was flagged leaving JFK on a federal transport code three days ago, and her credit cards haven't made a single transaction since she bought a cup of coffee in Queens!”
Ethan’s breath caught. “A federal transport code?”
“Yes!” Chloe hissed. “Not commercial airlines. Federal. Which means either she has friends in high places you never knew about, or she’s hiding behind a government firewall that even your corporate hackers can’t penetrate.”
Ethan sank slowly back into his leather chair, running both hands over his face. The arrogance that had defined his entire life—the belief that money could buy, fix, or override any obstacle—felt like a fragile glass cage shattering around him.
For seven years, he had treated Maya like a priceless ornament. He bought her dresses she never asked for, installed her in a mansion she never decorated, and paraded her in front of cameras to project an image of grounded, wholesome nobility. He assumed her quietness was compliance. He assumed her gentle demeanor meant she had no interior will of her own.
He had loved her, yes—in his own possessive, demanding way. But he had never respected her mind. He had never imagined that beneath that quiet, unassuming exterior lay a brilliant, razor-sharp scientist who could quietly dismantle her entire domestic life and disappear into a classified government project without leaving a single digital footprint.

“Find her,” Ethan whispered, his voice trembling with a mixture of fury and desperate panic. “I don't care how much it costs. Use every backchannel we have with the Department of Energy, the NSF, the defense contractors. Find out where she went.”
Chloe stared at him, her expression hardening from annoyance into genuine alarm. For the first time, she realized that Ethan wasn't just angry about a broken marriage; he was utterly unravelling because the one thing he couldn't control was the only thing he had ever truly needed to keep his empire looking legitimate.
