Chapter 5 - Landing in a New WorldThe captain’s announcement chimed through the cabin intercom, breaking the quiet intimacy of the night flight.

“Ladies and gentlemen, we are beginning our descent into New York John F. Kennedy International Airport. Local time is 6:45 AM, and the temperature is forty-two degrees with clear skies.”
As the aircraft banked over the glittering skyline of Manhattan—the very city where he had built his empire and broken his marriage—William felt a strange, terrifying sense of rebirth. The city lights twinkled like a million diamond dust particles across the dark river.
Olivia began gathering coloring books, toy airplanes, and stray wrappers into her canvas carry-on bag. Her movements were calm, measured, but her shoulders were slightly tense as she anticipated the logistics of disembarking with two toddlers alone in a bustling airport.
William stood up, sliding into the aisle.
“Let me take the bags,” William said, his voice leaving no room for argument.
Olivia looked up, surprised. “William, you don't need to—this isn't a board meeting, you don't have to delegate—’
“I’m not delegating,” William interrupted, a faint, genuine smile touching the corners of his mouth. “I’m parenting. For the first time in my life.”
He reached down, hoisting both heavy diaper bags over his broad shoulders without a second thought. When Julian and his brother Leo woke up, rubbing their sleepy eyes, William knelt down beside their seats, right at their eye level.
“Good morning, champions,” William said, his voice warm and steady. “Ready to see New York?”
The twins blinked, looking up at him with those identical slate-gray eyes, before breaking into sleepy, bright grins that mirrored William’s own smile.
When they stepped off the jet bridge into the bustling terminal of JFK, the morning light hit the terminal glass windows, casting a brilliant golden glow across the floor. Regina Walsh, William’s executive assistant, was waiting near the gate holding a digital tablet, expecting her boss to rush past her toward his waiting chauffeured car and head straight to the pediatric research keynote dinner.
Instead, Regina stopped dead in her tracks.
She watched William Carter—the ruthless tech titan who hadn't taken a personal day in six years—walking slowly beside Olivia, carrying two children’s backpacks, holding little Leo’s small, warm hand in his own.
“Mr. Carter,” Regina stammered as they approached, lowering her tablet. “The... the investor briefing is pushed to 11 AM, but the keynote dinner is still—’
“Regina,” William interrupted smoothly, looking down at his son before raising his eyes to meet his assistant’s shocked gaze. “Cancel the keynote dinner. Cancel all evening appointments for the rest of the month.”
Regina’s jaw dropped. “Sir? But the pediatric research foundation—it’s our biggest networking event of the quarter!”

William smiled, squeezing Leo’s small hand a little tighter while looking across at Olivia, who was watching him with a look of profound, dawning respect.
“Tell them,” William said clearly, “that I’ve finally decided to invest in the most important research project of my life.”
