Chapter 2 - The Morning After at the PenthouseThe New Year’s sun rose over the frozen expanse of the Mississippi River, casting a brilliant, blinding glare across the glass-walled living room of the penthouse.

Inside, the aftermath of the previous night’s chaos remained untouched. Splintered crystal, dark red wine stains soaking into the expensive wool area rug, and shattered porcelain plates littered the floor around the ruined dining table.
Arthur Charles Vance—the patriarch who believed his mere presence entitled him to rule over my life—sat in an armchair near the floor-to-ceiling windows, nursing a cup of black coffee. His tailored blazer was draped over the back of the sofa, and his face wore a scowl of deep, indignant irritation.
"I still say the girl has lost her mind," Charles muttered, glaring at the wine stain on the rug as if it were a personal insult directed at him. "Throwing a temper tantrum like an unrefined child. Breaking good crystal just because she couldn't handle a little family discipline."
Brian paced back and forth across the hardwood floor, his phone clutched tightly in his hand. His knuckles were white, and dark circles shadowed his eyes. He hadn't slept a wink.
"Dad, you don't understand," Brian snapped, stopping his pacing to glare at his father. "She didn't just throw a tantrum. She walked out of here with her phone, she went straight to a hospital, and she called the police."
Patricia looked up from her seat at the breakfast bar, her expression a mix of aristocratic disdain and mounting worry. "The police? Over a minor domestic disagreement? Honestly, Brian, you should have put your foot down months ago. Women today are far too independent. A firm hand is the only way to keep a household stable."
"Mother, shut up!" Brian hissed, his voice cracking with panic. "You don't get it! It wasn't just a disagreement. Last night, right after she left, I tried to log into my brokerage portal to check the quarterly dividend distribution from the trust transfer... and my access was completely denied."
Charles waved a dismissive hand, taking a sip of his coffee. "Locked out? Call the broker. Tell them it's a technical glitch. You're a co-beneficiary of a multi-million-dollar portfolio; they'll fix it by noon."
"I did call them," Brian said, his voice rising in pitch. "The automated system said the account has been frozen under a federal fraud injunction filed by David Sterling—Valerie’s corporate attorney!"
The silence that fell over the penthouse was absolute.
Patricia’s coffee cup clattered against its saucer. Lauren dropped her phone onto the kitchen island, her mouth falling open in horror.
"Federal... fraud injunction?" Charles repeated, slowly standing up from his chair. His arrogant posture faltered slightly as reality began to pierce through his thick bubble of entitlement. "That’s impossible. Sterling doesn't have jurisdiction over private family trusts. We had the power of attorney notarized!"
"It was forged, Dad!" Brian shouted, finally losing his composure as he threw his hands in the air. "She knows! She knows about the stock options transfer, she knows about the shell company accounts we set up in the Caymans, and if those cops walk through that door, we are looking at federal prison time!"
Before Charles could formulate a response, a sharp, heavy pounding echoed against the double oak doors of the penthouse private foyer.
Thump. Thump. Thump.
Everyone froze.
Patricia placed a trembling hand over her chest. Lauren whimpered, backing away toward the kitchen hallway.
Brian stared at the front door as if it were a monster about to break through.
"Minneapolis Police Department!" a deep, authoritative voice boomed from the hallway, accompanied by the distinct clanking of heavy tactical gear. "Open the door immediately with your hands visible, or we will breach!"
Charles’s face turned from pale to an ugly, mottled shade of crimson. "This is an outrage! I am Charles Vance! I demand to speak with—"
The heavy oak door didn't just open—it was pushed aside with clinical, overwhelming force as Detective Miller, flanked by four uniformed officers wearing body armor and carrying restraint gear, stepped directly into the pristine living room.
"Arthur Charles Vance?" Detective Miller asked, his eyes scanning the room before locking onto my former father-in-law.
"I am an upstanding citizen—" Charles started, puffing out his chest.
"You're under arrest for felony domestic assault, third-degree assault of a pregnant person, and aiding and abetting unlawful restraint," Miller interrupted smoothly, motioning to the officers. "Put your hands behind your back."
As the heavy steel cuffs clicked around Charles’s wrists, Patricia let out a piercing shriek.
"You can't do this!" Patricia cried, standing up and rushing toward the officers. "Do you know who we are? We are the Vances! My son is married to—"
"Your son is also under arrest," Detective Miller said, gesturing to two officers who immediately stepped toward Brian.
Brian didn't fight back. He didn't yell or puff out his chest. He simply stared down at the floor as the cold steel cuffs locked around his wrists, the utter devastation of a man who had built his entire life on theft and arrogance finally crashing down around him.
"Brian..." Patricia whimpered, reaching out a trembling hand as her golden boy was led away toward the private elevator.

Detective Miller lingered for a moment longer, looking around the shattered remains of the New Year's dinner table before pulling a small digital tablet from his tactical vest. He tapped the screen and held it up, displaying a crisp, high-definition security still captured by the penthouse hallway cameras the night before.
"For the record," Detective Miller said quietly, looking at Patricia and Lauren, "complicity in violent felony assault carries the same prison sentence as execution. Enjoy your morning."
