Chapter 6 - The Alliance of ShadowsThe private dining room at The Brown Palace Hotel was closed to the public that evening, reserved entirely for a single party of two.

I sat at the corner of a velvet-draped table, watching the reflections of crystal chandeliers flicker against the mahogany walls. Across from me sat Elias Vance.
In person, he was even more imposing than his reputation suggested. Dressed in a tailored charcoal suit that fit his broad shoulders perfectly, with dark, piercing eyes and hair touched with silver at the temples, he radiated the quiet, lethal calm of a man who owned the room simply by breathing in it.
He didn't touch his glass of sparkling water. He simply looked down at the open ledger resting between us on the table.
“Arthur didn't waste any time getting these files to me,” Elias said, his deep baritone rumbling quietly through the quiet room.
“Arthur is thorough,” I replied, keeping my voice steady despite the intense pressure of his gaze. “When we realized what Grant had hidden in that safety deposit box, we knew it extended far beyond my personal divorce proceedings.”
Elias raised his dark eyebrows slightly. “You’re remarkably composed, Ms. Sterling. Most people in your position would be terrified just hearing my name, let alone sitting across from me after discovering my family’s history linked to your father-in-law.”
“I was burned by a cigarette while pregnant, locked out of my own home, and robbed of over a million dollars by a family of parasites,” I said, meeting his gaze without flinching. “Fear is a luxury I ran out of weeks ago, Mr. Vance.”
A slow, grim smile touched the corner of Elias’s mouth. It wasn't warm, but it held a strange, undeniable respect.
“Fair enough,” Elias murmured, leaning back in his chair. “Grant Sterling thought he was untouchable. Ten years ago, he and a cartel of corrupt corporate raiders destroyed my father’s business, drove my mother to an early grave, and left me with nothing. I spent a decade hunting down every single one of them. But Grant... Grant slipped through the cracks, hiding behind a respectable suburban family facade in Denver.”
“Until now,” I added.
“Until now,” Elias agreed. He reached into his coat pocket, pulled out a thick manila envelope, and slid it across the table toward me. “This contains the complete federal indictment package my legal team has compiled against Grant and his associates over the past five years. It includes wire fraud, racketeering, and corporate espionage.”
I opened the envelope and scanned the first page. My eyes widened. “This is enough to put him away for the rest of his natural life. Why haven't you filed it?”
“Because,” Elias said softly, “justice served in a federal courtroom is too merciful for a man like Grant. I wanted him to lose everything first. And you, Ms. Sterling... you already took care of the first half.”
“What do you want from me?” I asked directly.
“A partnership,” Elias said without hesitation. “You want full, unencumbered ownership of your assets restored, and a ironclad restraining order that ensures the Sterling family can never legally touch you or your child again. I want Grant Sterling’s complete financial ruin, publicly exposed, down to his last penny.”
He extended a hand across the table.
I looked at his large, steady hand, then up into his dark, intense eyes. I knew who Elias Vance was. I knew the rumors—that he operated in gray areas where the law didn't reach. But looking at him tonight, I didn't see a monster.
I saw an ally.

I slid my hand into his, sealing the pact with a firm, unbreakable grip.
“Let’s destroy them,” I said.
