Chapter 4 - The House of CardsThe silence that followed my words was absolute, broken only by the steady, dreary hiss of the Seattle rain.

Madison let out a high-pitched, hysterical shriek. "That’s illegal! You tricked him! You trapped him!"

"Trapped him?" I turned my gaze to her, my eyes narrowing with a cold, piercing intensity that made her shrink back against her father. "Madison, you spent seven years sleeping with my husband in hotel rooms paid for by my father’s company. You wore the jewelry he bought with embezzled funds. You planned a wedding on the corpse of my family’s legacy. Don't talk to me about trapping people. You both walked into this cage willingly. You just didn't read the warning label."

Marcus Blake’s face darkened with a dangerous, cornered fury. As a real estate mogul used to bullying contractors and municipal boards, his instinct was always intimidation. He took a heavy, threatening step toward me, his massive frame looming over my pregnant form.

"Listen to me, you ungrateful little—"

Clack.

The sharp, heavy sound of a car door slamming shut echoed across the courtyard.

Before Marcus could finish his sentence, two men in sharp, charcoal-gray suits stepped out from the back of a black Mercedes parked directly behind the Lexus. They didn't look like security guards; they looked like federal prosecutors.

One of them—a tall, imposing man with silver-streaked hair and cold gray eyes—adjusted his tie and strode directly toward us, flashing a gold badge case.

"Mr. Marcus Blake?" the man asked, his voice cutting through the damp air like a razor.

Marcus froze, his hand half-raised. "Who the hell are you?"

"Special Agent Vance, FBI White-Collar Division. And this is Assistant U.S. Attorney Henderson." The man glanced briefly at Ethan, who was now hyperventilating against the pillar, before turning his gaze back to Marcus. "We have federal warrants to execute regarding the seizure of assets tied to Vanguard Capital and multiple shell corporations linked to money laundering, wire fraud, and interstate embezzlement."

A collective gasp rippled through the wedding guests. Several people immediately began backing away toward the street, desperate to distance themselves from the unfolding catastrophe.

"This is insane!" Marcus shouted, his face purple. "My company is clean! We’re premier real estate developers in King County! You can't just—"

"We aren't here for your real estate firm, Mr. Blake," Agent Vance interrupted smoothly, pulling a thick stack of documents from his leather briefcase. "We’re here because your prospective son-in-law used your commercial properties as a laundering conduit for over four million dollars stolen from the Sterling Global estate. And according to our records, your own corporate accounts received direct wire transfers from those very same shell companies."

Color drained entirely from Marcus’s face. He slowly turned his head to look at Ethan, his expression murderous.

"Ethan..." Marcus whispered, the word a deadly hiss. "Tell me that's a lie."

Ethan couldn't speak. He slid down the stone pillar until he was sitting directly in the wet, dirty puddle on the concrete, his expensive navy suit ruined, his hands trembling violently over his face.

"It’s not a lie, Marcus," I said quietly, turning my back on them as I prepared to step back into the Lexus. "He sold you out just like he sold me out. Ambition makes fools of very stupid men."

As my chauffeur opened the car door, I paused and looked back one last time at the miserable tableau.

Madison was screaming at her father, accusing him of ruining her life. Marcus was swearing vengeance against a catatonic Ethan, who sat rocking back and forth in the rain, finally realizing the true cost of his greed.

The wedding of the year had officially become a federal crime scene.

And I hadn't even broken a sweat.
