Chapter 3 - The Fractured ToastAt precisely 10:00 PM, the string quartet faded into a respectful silence as a crystal-clear chime rang out across the ballroom.

Victoria Sterling stood on the elevated marble dais, holding a flute of vintage Dom Pérignon. Microphones amplified her crisp, patrician voice to every corner of the magnificent room.
“Ladies and gentlemen,” Victoria began, her smile radiant and entirely devoid of warmth. “Thank you all for gracing us with your presence tonight as we celebrate the first month of my precious grandson, Leo. As we look to the future of the Sterling dynasty, we are reminded that true legacy requires strength, purity of lineage, and uncompromised integrity.”
Avery stood near the edge of the dais, holding little Leo in her arms. She could feel the collective gaze of five hundred elite socialites shifting toward her like searchlights.
“In families like ours,” Victoria continued, letting her gaze drift directly down toward Avery, “tradition is our shield against the chaotic currents of the world. Every member of this household must stand as a pillar of absolute truth. And sometimes... the pruning of dead branches is necessary to keep the great oak strong.”
A murmur of appreciative laughter rippled through the front rows, though a few astute investors exchanged uneasy glances.
“To little Leo,” Victoria raised her glass high. “May he never be tainted by the deceit of outsiders.”
“To Leo,” the crowd echoed in unison, glasses clinking across the vast room like a chorus of tiny bells.
Liam leaned down, whispering into Avery’s ear, “Ignore her, Avery. She loves playing the dramatic matriarch. Come, let’s take Leo upstairs to the nursery; he’s starting to fuss.”
As Avery nodded in agreement, turning toward the grand staircase, the heavy oak doors at the main entrance of the ballroom suddenly burst open with a loud, echoing bang.
The music stopped dead. Every head whipped around toward the foyer.
Striding into the grand ballroom was not a late-arriving guest, but three stern-faced federal marshals in dark suits, flanked by a state prosecutor carrying a thick leather briefcase stamped with the Great Seal of the State of New York.
Whispers erupted instantly, swelling into a chaotic wave of panic.
Victoria’s glass slipped from her fingers, shattering against the marble dais with a sharp, lethal crack of crystal. Her pristine composure fractured in a single microsecond, replaced by genuine, unadulterated horror.
The lead marshal scanned the room, his voice booming through the PA system:
“We are executing a federal search and seizure warrant authorized by the District Attorney’s office. All corporate ledgers, trust deeds, and communication logs of Sterling-Vance Holdings are hereby impounded under suspicion of multi-million-dollar wire fraud, securities manipulation, and systemic embezzlement.”

The ballroom plunged into absolute, deafening silence. All eyes slowly turned away from the federal agents and settled on a single person standing on the dais.
Victoria Sterling.
