Chapter 5 - The Architect of FallThe breakthrough came at noon the following day, courtesy of Leo Mercer and a bruised, uncooperative ex-mercenary locked in the basement holding cells.

Matteo and I were standing in the estate's high-tech security command center when Leo walked in, tossing a heavy, encrypted satellite phone onto the central steel console.
"He cracked," Leo announced, wiping a drop of sweat from his forehead. "Took three broken ribs and a threat of extradition to a federal black site in Eastern Europe, but the boy finally sang."
Matteo didn't look up from the tablet where he was reviewing financial wire transfers. "Who’s the client?"
"Not the Bannons," Leo said, his voice dropping into a grim register. "And not the syndicates out of New York. It was domestic. Corporate."
I stepped closer to the console. "Corporate? What does a corporate executive care about a mafia safehouse or a cocktail waitress from the Velvet Room?"
"Not you, Rachel. Him," Leo corrected, nodding toward Matteo. "The man who paid for the hit was Arthur Sterling."
The name hit me like a physical blow to the chest.
I stumbled back a half-step, staring at Leo in utter incomprehension. "Sterling? My... my uncle Arthur?"
Matteo’s head snapped up, his dark eyes narrowing into dangerous slits. "Arthur Sterling? The real estate developer? The man who has been trying to buy up the entire waterfront district in South Boston through shell corporations?"
"He's my father's estranged brother," I whispered, my chest heaving as the horrifying pieces fell into place. "He owns half of commercial real estate in Dorchester and Southie. But... he hasn't spoken to our side of the family in fifteen years! He thinks my mother and I are beneath him because we don't carry his precious last name!"
"He doesn't care about your family tree," Matteo said, his voice dropping an octave as his rage began to coil beneath his skin like a compressed spring. "He cares about land. Three weeks ago, my holding company acquired the master lease on the three-block radius surrounding the Velvet Room—property Arthur Sterling has been trying to purchase for a major commercial redevelopment project. I refused his buyout offer."
"So when he couldn't buy the land from you," Leo added grimly, "he decided to manufacture a violent incident at your primary nightclub, create federal panic over organized crime turf wars, and force city officials to seize the property under emergency eminent domain laws. And you happened to be standing right in the crosshairs, Rachel."
"He used me," I whispered, the betrayal burning hotter than any fear I had felt over the past three days. "He knew I worked there. He probably knew about my mother’s medical bills, too. He thought if I got caught in the middle of a mob hit, nobody would look twice at a poor waitress getting caught in the crossfire."
Matteo walked around the console, his movements calm and deliberate, but the dark aura radiating from him was terrifying. He stopped in front of me, taking my cold hands in his.
"Arthur Sterling made a fatal miscalculation," Matteo said quietly, his voice carrying the absolute weight of a death sentence. "He thought he could use an innocent woman as collateral damage in a corporate land grab."

"What are you going to do?" I asked, looking up into his hardened face.
"I am going to pay your uncle a visit," Matteo replied. "And I am going to show him what happens when someone touches what belongs to my house."
