Chapter 5 - The Surgical Clean-UpBy sunrise, the grand estate on the hill looked less like a home of the elite and more like a crime scene frozen in time.

Federal marshals, state police investigators, and forensic accountants swarmed the property, executing simultaneous search warrants across Arthur Vance’s corporate offices, offshore accounts, and municipal properties. The flash drive I had dropped onto the federal secure portal at midnight had unleashed an avalanche of digital evidence so precise, complete, and legally airtight that defense attorneys wouldn't even bother filing motions for bail.
In the private VIP wing of St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital, the winter sunlight streamed through the clean glass windows, casting a warm glow over Sebastián’s hospital bed.
Orthopedic specialists had successfully reset and plated his shattered knee, assuring us that with months of physical therapy, he would walk without a permanent limp.
I sat quietly in the vinyl armchair beside his bed, peeling an orange with my pocketknife, when a soft knock sounded at the door.
My chief logistics coordinator, a scarred, graying man named Mateo who had managed my European ports for twenty-five years, slipped into the room. He closed the door silently behind him and handed me a thick manila folder.
“It’s done, boss,” Mateo reported in a low, respectful murmur. “Arthur Vance’s corporate empire has been placed into emergency receivership by federal regulators. Every shell company has been frozen. His personal assets, real estate holdings, and trust funds have been seized to cover back taxes and municipal fraud penalties. By noon today, the family won't even own the clothes on their backs.”
I nodded slowly, placing a segment of orange on a small plate for Sebastián. “And Renata?”
“Her personal accounts were tied directly to her father’s blind trusts,” Mateo replied with a faint, grim smile. “She tried to access her debit cards this morning at the jail intake desk. Every single one was declined. Her designer dresses, luxury vehicles, and jewelry collection are already being inventoried by federal marshals for auction. She’s facing trial for extortion, aggravated assault, and conspiracy to commit murder, with zero chance of bond.”
Sebastián leaned back against his pillows, watching us with a mixture of awe and lingering trauma in his dark eyes.
“You dismantled a multi-million-dollar syndicate and a corrupt corporate dynasty in less than twelve hours,” Sebastián said, shaking his head slowly. “Without firing a single bullet inside that ballroom.”
“Bullets make noise, son,” I replied quietly, folding my pocketknife and sliding it back into my pocket. “Paper trails make permanent cages. For decades, men like Arthur Vance and his daughter believed they were untouchable because they hid behind lawyers, social status, and polite smiles. They forgot a very simple truth of the world: power isn't about how much money you accumulate. It’s about who controls the foundations beneath your feet.”
Mateo bowed his head slightly toward both of us, gave a crisp nod, and slipped out of the room as quietly as he had entered.
Sebastián looked down at his bandaged leg, then up at me, the heavy burden of the past few weeks finally lifting from his shoulders.
“You said you buried El Caminante thirty years ago, Dad,” Sebastián said softly. “When Mom died... you swore you were done with all of that.”
I met my son’s gaze, placing my weathered hand gently over his.
“I laid the old life to rest so you could have a clean start,” I answered honestly. “And I would have stayed buried in the dirt until my final breath. But some people mistake a father’s retirement for weakness. They mistook my old jacket and my quiet truck for helplessness.”

I squeezed his hand.
“A wolf doesn't stop being a wolf just because he decides to sleep by the fire, Sebastián. He just waits until someone threatens his pack.”
