Chapter 4 - The Federal BreachMy head snapped toward the intercom.

"On what grounds?" I barked, my hands gripping the armrests of my chair. "My corporate holdings are clean. Every shell company is partitioned under federal compliance guidelines."
“Not corporate, Danny,” Luke’s voice crackled, frantic and urgent. “It’s an anti-syndicate racketeering sweep tied to the South Side docks. Someone inside the inner circle flipped. They have a signed deposition claiming you orchestrated the Cicero warehouse takeover last month.”
"Who?"
“We don't know yet. But they’re breaching the perimeter right now. Heavy tactical gear. They’re bypassing the front security checkpoints through the secondary service road.”
The secondary service road.
My blood ran cold. The service road ran directly beneath the eastern wing—right past the service elevators and the seventy-two-step spiral staircase where Emma had collapsed hours earlier.
I looked back at Emma. She was pale, her bandaged hands trembling slightly as she gripped the edge of the cot.
"Get out," I commanded, my voice turning to ice. "Go down to the secure basement bunker behind the pantry. There's a panic room with a direct exit to the drainage tunnels. Take the service lift. Now."
"And you?" she asked, her voice cracking.
"I have a corporation to defend," I replied coldly, spinning my wheelchair around and wheeling toward the door at top speed. "Luke! Meet me in the main control room. Unlock the basement sub-grids!"
By the time I reached the grand executive foyer, the front security glass had already shattered in a deafening explosion of sound and fury.
Flashbangs detonated in the courtyard, painting the marble pillars in harsh, blinding bursts of white light. Heavy tactical boots thundered across the travertine floor as a dozen heavily armed federal agents poured into the mansion, their assault rifles raised, sweeping the corridors with military precision.
I sat alone in the center of the grand foyer, perfectly still, my hands resting calmly on my lap, blocking their advance before they could push deeper into the private residential wings.
"Federal agents! Do not move!" a voice bellowed through a tactical helmet.
A tall man in an FBI tactical vest stepped forward, lowering his rifle barrel just enough to look down at me. It was Special Agent Marcus Vance—ironically, no relation to my empire, but an ambitious federal prosecutor who had spent five years trying to nail my syndicate to the wall.
"Daniel Vance," Agent Vance said, a tight, triumphant smile pulling at the corner of his mouth. "End of the line. We have your second-in-command’s financial ledgers, encrypted server backups from the Cicero warehouses, and a signed witness statement placing you at the center of the operation."
I looked up at him, my expression completely impassive, though my mind was racing at light speed.
Luke had betrayed me? No. Luke was as deep in the syndicate as I was; going down meant a life sentence for him too. Unless... the betrayal came from someone else. Someone within the inner circle whom we had overlooked.
"You're a long way from downtown, Agent Vance," I said smoothly, my voice echoing off the high vaulted ceilings. "And warrants signed on midnight tips usually don't hold up once my legal team starts tearing through your procedural errors."
"We'll see about procedural errors," Agent Vance sneered, motioning to two officers behind him. "Cuff him. Clear the rest of the house. I want every room searched—start with the private living quarters upstairs."
My chest tightened. Upstairs.

If they searched the private wing, they wouldn't just find corporate ledgers. They would find the encrypted physical hard drives locked inside my desk safe—drives containing the real, unfiltered architecture of every asset, offshore account, and syndicate contact across the Midwest.
And worse... they would find Emma.
