Chapter 7 - Epilogue — The Sunrise After the StormSix months later.

The sun was rising over the Chicago skyline, casting a warm, golden glow across the polished hardwood floors of Lena’s new downtown loft. The high ceilings, exposed brick walls, and tall windows looked out over the bustling morning traffic below—a vibrant, living city full of promise and new beginnings.

In the open-plan kitchen, the smell of freshly brewed coffee and pancakes filled the air.

Lena stood by the kitchen island, wearing a bright yellow sweater, laughing as Derek flipped a pancake high into the air and caught it neatly back in the skillet. Her left arm was completely healed, her wrist brace long gone, and her laugh was light, musical, and entirely unburdened.

I sat at the dining table, reviewing architectural blueprints for an upcoming community center project, sipping my coffee while watching my family function in the harmony they deserved.

My phone buzzed on the table. It wasn't an emergency. It was a text from Marcus Vance confirming that the final restitution funds from Travis’s seized accounts had been successfully transferred to Lena’s new, independent bank account.

Financial freedom. Physical safety. Emotional peace.

Lena walked over, placed a fresh cup of coffee beside my laptop, and leaned down to kiss the top of my head.

"What are you smiling at, Dad?" she asked, her eyes sparkling with happiness.

"Just realizing how lucky I am," I said softly, reaching up to squeeze her hand. "And how glad I am that your uncle Derek was fifteen minutes away."

Lena smiled, looking over at Derek, who was currently attempting—and failing—to flip a pancake behind his back, sending it splattering onto the kitchen counter to our collective amusement.

"He didn't just save my life that day," Lena whispered, her voice filled with deep, abiding gratitude. "He reminded me who I really am."

Outside the window, the morning traffic hummed, the city woke up to a brand new day, and for the first time in a very long time, everything was exactly as it should be.
