Chapter 3 - The Freezing of the EmpireThe dismantling of Adrian Vale’s carefully constructed world did not take weeks, or even days. It took precisely fourteen minutes.

While my father’s personal medical team attended to my injuries in the estate’s private drawing room, treating the severe welts with clinical precision and wrapping my back in soothing antiseptic bandages, the real devastation was unfolding across the digital and financial landscape of downtown Chicago.
Julian Vance, my father’s chief legal counsel and head of corporate acquisitions, stood in the center of our high-tech war room, projecting real-time financial feeds onto the massive wall monitors.
“All primary commercial accounts associated with Vale Enterprises have been successfully locked,” Julian reported crisply, tapping his tablet. He glanced toward me where I sat resting in a deep leather armchair, wrapped in my father’s heavy coat. His pale gray eyes softened with unspoken concern before returning to the data. “We executed the emergency injunctions using the cryptographic proof Callie downloaded from Adrian’s personal server.”
On the screens, red warning banners flashed across corporate ledgers, bank statements, and wire transfer logs.
Adrian had spent the last two years systematically looting his own company’s pension fund and redirecting capital through ghost accounts managed by Vanessa’s shell corporation, Veneer Consulting. He had believed himself untouchable, insulated by high-priced corporate lawyers and a network of corrupt local accountants.
He had forgotten a fundamental rule of the business underworld: You can only steal from a giant if the giant is looking the other way. And my father had never looked away; he had simply given Adrian enough rope to fashion his own gallows.
“What about Vanessa?” I asked, my voice steady despite the lingering physical ache in my shoulders.
Julian smirked, pulling up a secondary file containing intercepted text messages and offshore account registries. “Miss Sterling is currently sitting in the local precinct holding cell. When our legal team presented her with the tax evasion and wire fraud indictments tied directly to Veneer Consulting, she spent approximately three minutes crying before she handed over every single recorded conversation, email, and forged signature implicating Adrian as the primary architect of the embezzlement scheme.”
I let out a slow, cold breath. Loyalty bought with stolen money always dissolved the moment the bank account hit zero. Vanessa had traded Adrian out to save her own skin before the police even finished reading her rights.
At that moment, the heavy oak doors of the war room swung open, and my father walked in, removing his leather gloves. He looked at me, his slate-gray eyes assessing my condition with fierce paternal scrutiny.
“How are you feeling, Callie?” he asked, pulling up a chair beside me.
“I’ll live, Dad,” I replied, offering a faint, tired smile. “Though I think I’m done with country estates for a while.”
“Good,” my father said firmly, taking my hand in his warm, calloused palm. “Because your old suite at the primary estate in the city has been prepared since you married that fool. You are never stepping foot near this property again.”
“What happens to Adrian now?” I asked, watching the monitors display the live feed of the county holding facility where Adrian was currently being processed.
My father’s expression hardened into ice. “He is facing federal charges for financial fraud, corporate racketeering, and extortion. With the encrypted audio recording from your pendant documenting tonight’s assault, the state attorney’s office has added felony domestic violence and aggravated assault charges with hate multipliers. He will never see the outside of a maximum-security federal penitentiary.”
Just then, the intercom on the central console chimed, and the head of our onsite security detail spoke up.
“Sir, Mr. Adrian Vale’s father, Richard Vale, has just arrived at the front gate. He’s demanding to speak with you. He claims he can settle this.”
My father exchanged a brief, knowing look with Julian before turning back to me. “Richard Vale. The man who spent twenty years groveling at my feet for commercial real estate contracts, desperately pretending he didn't know who we were.”

I straightened up in my chair, pulling the heavy wool coat tighter around my shoulders. Let him come. I wanted to watch the rest of the illusion burn to ash.
“Let him in,” I said quietly. “Let’s see what a father has to say when his son’s house of cards finally collapses.”
