Chapter 6 - The Final ReckoningTwo weeks later, the courtroom of the Denver Federal District Court was cool, quiet, and overwhelmingly sterile.

The media had caught wind of the high-profile white-collar fraud and domestic violence indictment involving a prominent tech executive, and the press gallery at the back of the room was packed with reporters tapping furiously on their laptops.

I sat in the front row of the gallery, flanked by my father and two federal victim advocates.

Across the aisle, seated at the defendant's table in a bright orange jumpsuit with his wrists shackled, sat Randy. He looked utterly hollowed out. His hair was unwashed, his skin sallow, and his designer suits had been replaced by prison issue. He looked ten years older, hollowed out by the sudden, brutal realization that his charm, his mother’s coddling, and his arrogance couldn't buy his way out of federal prison.

When the bailiff announced the entry of Judge Harris, everyone stood.

The sentencing hearing was swift. Because the financial fraud exceeded five hundred thousand dollars and was compounded by violent aggravated assault and interstate intimidation tactics, the prosecutor pushed for the maximum statutory penalty.

Judge Harris looked down from the elevated mahogany bench, his expression stern and unimpressed as he reviewed the victim impact statement I had submitted—complete with medical records, photographic evidence, and audio transcripts.

“Mr. Parker,” Judge Harris said, his deep voice echoing through the silent courtroom. “You operated under the delusion that intimidation, financial manipulation, and physical violence could be used to subjugate your spouse and strip her of her legally acquired assets. You abused your position of trust, committed federal wire fraud, and inflicted severe physical and psychological trauma.”

Randy stared blindly at the defense table, his lips trembling silently.

“This court takes crimes of domestic violence and white-collar exploitation with the utmost gravity,” the judge continued. “It is the sentence of this court that you be remanded to the custody of the Federal Bureau of Prisons for a term of eight years, with no possibility of parole for the first six, followed by three years of supervised probation and full restitution payments to all affected parties.”

Bangs gavel.

The sound was sharp, final, and absolute.

As federal marshals stepped up behind Randy, clicking his shackles and lifting him to his feet, he turned his head slowly toward the gallery. For a fraction of a second, his eyes met mine.

There was no anger left in his gaze. Only a pathetic, desperate plea for mercy that came years too late.

I didn't flinch. I didn't look away. I simply stared back at him with calm, unblinking indifference, letting him see exactly what a woman looks like when she has taken her life back entirely.
