Chapter 5 - Unearthing the PastWith Tristan locked away in maximum security awaiting trial, the federal and state investigations expanded rapidly, unearthing a staggering web of deceit that went far beyond my own poisoning.

Sterling Laboratories launched an internal audit of Tristan’s research division, uncovering years of falsified safety reports, unauthorized diversion of restricted biological compounds, and suspicious financial irregularities tied to offshore shell companies. It turned out I wasn't the first person Tristan had systematically manipulated or poisoned; former business associates, academic rivals, and even an ex-fiancée who had mysteriously suffered from "chronic neurological illness" a decade prior suddenly came forward with their own terrifying stories once Tristan’s arrest made national headlines.
I spent the following months reclaiming my life piece by piece.
My leg healed slowly through intensive physical therapy, leaving behind a faint, silvery scar that served not as a reminder of weakness, but as a battle scar—a permanent testament to the night I refused to let myself die quietly in a dark bedroom.
My mother, Miriam, flew down from Oregon to stay with me in the suburban estate, helping me pack up Tristan’s personal belongings, clear out his home office, and purge every last trace of his toxic presence from my home.
"You know, sweetheart," my mother said one afternoon as we sat on the back patio drinking iced tea while the warm spring sun washed over the garden, "when you married him, I always worried he was too rigid, too calculated. But I never, in my worst nightmares, imagined he was a monster."
"He wasn't a monster when we met, Mom," I replied quietly, looking out over the manicured lawn. "Or maybe he was just very good at hiding behind a pristine resume and a charming smile. But monsters don't survive when you turn on the bright lights. They shrivel up and break."
"And what about his mother? Have you heard from Florence?" she asked carefully.
I shook my head. "Florence tried to file a civil countersuit claiming that Tristan’s assets belonged to her family trust and that my legal freeze was an illegal seizure. But once the federal prosecutors presented her with evidence that Tristan had been embezzling from her retirement accounts as well to fund his offshore debts, she quietly dropped her lawyers and moved out of state."
Just then, my phone buzzed on the patio table.
It was a notification from Marcus Vance, my lead corporate litigator.

“Final asset forfeiture and trust restitution orders are fully stamped and approved by the federal judge, Reese. You now hold 100% clear title to the estate, the corporate holdings, and all recovered liquid assets. Congratulations. You won.”
I smiled, locking the screen and setting the phone back down. Winning wasn't just about reclaiming money or property; it was about reclaiming my right to exist without fear, without manipulation, and without anyone ever telling me that my voice didn't matter.
