Chapter 5 - The Trap SpringsThe federal indictment came down over the weekend like a tactical airstrike.

By Monday morning, headlines across every major financial publication blared the news: TECH BILLIONAIRE TRISTAN VANCE ARRESTED FOR FRAUD, EMBEZZLEMENT, AND ATTEMPTED ASSASSINATION OF HIS WIFE.

I sat in the sleek, glass-walled conference room of a top-tier downtown law firm, wearing a sharp white pantsuit that contrasted starkly with the dark memories of the hospital ward. Beside me sat Marcus, Detective Vance, and my newly appointed lead divorce attorney, a fierce shark of a woman named Sarah Sterling.

The heavy glass doors of the conference room swung open.

Tristan walked in, flanked by two high-priced defense lawyers. He looked shell-shocked. The immaculate, arrogant billionaire facade was completely gone; his hair was disheveled, his designer tie crooked, and his eyes bloodshot from lack of sleep.

He stopped dead in his tracks when he saw me sitting at the head of the conference table, calmly sipping black coffee.

“Reese,” he choked out, his voice shaking with a volatile mix of fury and disbelief. “You... you broke into my bank vault. That’s stolen property! I’ll have you disbarred, arrested, prosecuted—”

“Sit down, Mr. Vance,” Attorney Sarah Sterling commanded, her voice slicing through his tirade like a guillotine.

Tristan’s defense lawyers pulled him down into a chair, frantically whispering in his ear as they slid a thick stack of documents across the mahogany table.

I pushed the documents toward him with my fingernail.

“What is this?” Tristan hissed, flipping open the pages.

“That is your absolute surrender, Tristan,” I said evenly, my voice devoid of emotion, pure and cold as ice. “Those papers represent the immediate forfeiture of your controlling shares in Vance Capital Technologies, the complete transfer of our La Jolla estate and all personal assets into my name, and an irrevocable waiver of any future claims against my personal estate.”

Tristan stared at the papers, his chest heaving as he realized the sheer scale of the checkmate. The leather binder we had pulled from his bank vault contained airtight proof not only of his financial crimes, but of the exact chemical compound he had used to poison me over the past fourteen months.

“You can't do this to me,” Tristan whispered, his voice cracking into a pathetic whine. “I built this company from scratch! I made you! If you sign these charges over to the federal prosecutor, I’ll spend the next thirty years in a maximum-security prison!”

“Yes,” I smiled, leaning forward across the table, resting my chin on my hands. “You will. And you’ll have plenty of time to reflect on what it feels like to be trapped, helpless, and completely at the mercy of someone else’s control.”

Tristan lunged forward across the table, his face twisting into a mask of pure demonic rage. “You ungrateful bitch! Without me, you’re nothing! You’re weak! You’re sick! You would have died on that bedroom floor if I hadn't let you crawl away—”

He stopped mid-sentence.

The conference room doors swung wide open again.

Two federal marshals stepped inside, their hands resting heavily on their holstered sidearms.

“Tristan Vance?” the lead marshal called out coldly. “You are under federal arrest for racketeering, wire fraud, and attempted murder. Stand up and put your hands behind your back.”

Tristan looked from the marshals to me, realizing for the first time that his money, his lawyers, and his intimidation tactics couldn't save him anymore.

As the steel handcuffs clicked around his wrists and he was dragged out of the room kicking and screaming obscenities, I didn't feel joy, or triumph, or even anger.

I just felt an overwhelming, beautiful sense of absolute silence.
