Chapter 5 - The Ashes of the PastBy midnight, the safe house in Lincoln Park felt entirely different.

The storm had finally passed, leaving behind a crisp, star-studded Chicago sky that cast a cool silver glow across the quiet parlor. Sarah had been safely checked over by a private physician, given a mild sedative, and tucked into the guest suite down the hall. Little Eli was fast asleep in his crib, breathing with the sweet, untbothered innocence of infancy.
I sat alone on the leather sofa in the main study, a soft wool blanket draped over my shoulders, staring down into a cup of chamomile tea.
The heavy oak door opened softly, and Gabriel walked in. He had discarded his tactical gear, wearing a crisp white dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his elbows, revealing the powerful, corded muscle of his forearms. He poured two fingers of amber bourbon into a heavy crystal glass and sat down on the opposite end of the sofa.
“Your sister is going to be fine,” Gabriel said quietly, breaking the silence. “Dr. Evans says the bruising will heal within a week. No permanent damage.”
“Thank you, Gabriel,” I murmured, finally using his first name without hesitation. I looked up to meet his gaze. “For bringing her back. For... everything.”
Gabriel took a slow sip of his bourbon, his dark eyes softening as he looked at me across the dim room.
“You saved my nephew, Claire,” he said, his voice deep and steady. “And you walked through hell to protect your family. In my world, debt is paid in full. But what you did tonight... that wasn't about ledgers or corporate audits.”
“What was it about, then?” I asked softly.
“Survival,” he replied, setting his glass down and shifting closer to me on the sofa. “And something a lot more dangerous.”
He reached out, his warm, calloused fingers gently brushing a stray lock of hair away from my forehead, his touch lingering against my cheek. For a man who ruled the criminal underworld of Chicago with an iron fist, his touch was surprisingly tender—a silent reassurance that the storm had finally passed.
“Viktor’s syndicate has been dismantled,” Gabriel continued, his face inches from mine. “Federal marshals seized all his assets by nightfall. The board at Apex-Logistics has been purged, and your name has been officially cleared of any financial wrongdoing. You’re free, Claire. You can walk away tomorrow morning and never look back at this world again.”
I looked into his eyes, searching for any trace of the cold, ruthless mob boss everyone feared, but finding only the man who had torn the city apart to keep his family safe.
“And if I don’t want to walk away?” I asked, my voice barely above a whisper.
May you like
A slow, unmistakable smile broke across Gabriel’s face, warm and genuine. He leaned in closer, his lips brushing softly against mine in a tender, lingering kiss that tasted of quiet victory and a brand-new beginning.
“Then I suppose,” Gabriel murmured against my lips, “we’ll just have to rewrite the ledger together.”
