Chapter 6 - The Broken LinkTwo hours later, Liam Vance sat nervously on the edge of the leather sofa in my Cambridge safehouse, clutching a cup of black coffee like it was a lifeline.

He looked like a younger, rougher version of Julian—dark hair pushed back in disarray, haunted eyes, and the unmistakable tremors of a man whose life had spiraled completely out of control.
When Marcus and my enforcers had intercepted him outside a South Boston gambling den, Liam had thought he was walking into his execution. Instead, he had been brought to a multi-million-dollar safehouse, offered a hot meal, and told that his entire six-figure debt had just been wiped clean.
“I don’t understand,” Liam stammered, looking up at me as I poured myself a glass of scotch across the room. “You’re Adrian Moretti? Evelyn’s... ex-husband?”
“That’s correct,” I said, taking a slow sip of the amber liquid.
“And you paid off O’Leary? Why? What do you want from me? My brother doesn't have that kind of money to pay you back—”
“I don’t want your money, Liam,” I interrupted, walking over and placing the original promissory note—marked PAID IN FULL in bold red ink—onto the coffee table in front of him.
Liam stared down at the paper, his hands shaking. “Then why? Nobody does something like this for nothing. Especially not a guy like you.”
“I did it for your brother,” I said quietly.
Liam looked up, his brow furrowing in confusion. “Julian? You hate Julian! He’s... he’s the man raising your kids with Evelyn!”
“Julian is a good man, Liam,” I replied, my voice devoid of the bitterness that once would have poisoned those words. “He saved your brother’s life, he’s been a devoted father to my children, and he loves Evelyn with a steady, honest devotion that I was too arrogant to offer her when I had the chance.”
Liam swallowed hard, looking down at his coffee cup in shame. “I’ve been a disaster to my family. Julian has bailed me out a dozen times. I’m the reason he’s stressed all the time... the reason Evelyn worries.”
“Not anymore,” I said firmly. “Your debt to O’Leary is gone. O’Leary and his crew have permanently left Massachusetts. You are starting with a clean slate, Liam. But that slate comes with one absolute condition.”
Liam looked up, squaring his shoulders. “Name it.”
“You are going to clean up your act. You are going to check into a private recovery program in Vermont tomorrow morning, funded by me. You are going to get your life together, become a brother Julian can be proud of, and an uncle those kids deserve.”
Liam stared at me for a long, silent moment, searching my eyes for deceit or hidden traps. Finding none, a profound wave of relief and gratitude washed over his tired face.
“Why are you doing this, Adrian?” Liam asked softly. “Seriously. You could have crushed me. You could have used my debt to hurt Julian or get back at Evelyn.”
I walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window, looking out over the glittering skyline of Boston across the river.
“Because for three years, I believed that being a powerful man meant controlling everything and destroying anyone who stood in my way,” I murmured, my reflection staring back at me in the glass. “I’m finally learning that true power isn't about what you can destroy. It’s about what you’re willing to sacrifice to fix the things you broke.”

I turned back to face him.
“Get your things, Liam. Marcus is driving you to Vermont tonight.”
