Chapter 3 - The Awakening of the EmpireThe private medical suite on the top floor of the Romano Tower in Manhattan smelled of sterile antiseptic, white lilies, and expensive espresso.

I lay propped up on a motorized orthopedic bed, wearing a soft silk hospital gown while a private team of specialists tended to my cracked ribs, bandaging my torso with specialized compression wraps that immediately eased the agonizing pressure in my chest.
Sitting across from me in a leather wingback chair was my father. He held a crystal tumbler of scotch in one hand, staring silently into the amber liquid as the city lights twinkled far below us through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows.
For hours after we left the Greenwich mansion, nobody had spoken a word. My father had ordered his private trauma unit to treat me, while sending an entirely different kind of unit to handle Barrett Hayes.
The door to the suite clicked open, and Rocco—my father’s longtime consigliere and head of security—stepped inside. He looked immaculate in his three-piece suit, though the knuckles of his right hand were slightly bruised.
"Boss," Rocco said, bowing his head respectfully toward my father before looking over at me. "Miss Mallory. The situation is contained."
My father didn't look up from his glass. "Begin."
Rocco pulled a tablet from his jacket pocket and tapped the screen. "Within forty-five minutes of our extraction in Greenwich, Hayes Capital's primary institutional investors were quietly contacted by our banking partners. By 3:00 a.m., three major venture capital firms pulled their liquidity lines, citing 'imminent corporate instability and executive liability.'"
I blinked, staring at Rocco in astonishment. "You targeted his firm?"
"Miss Mallory," Rocco said calmly, as if reading a standard weather report, "your husband made two fatal errors tonight. First, he laid a hand on a Romano. Second, he assumed nobody would check his corporate portfolio before destroying him."
"It gets better," Rocco continued, tapping his screen again. "Our digital forensics team decrypted Barrett’s personal laptop and his office server from the Greenwich mansion. Not only did we find extensive documentation of his affair with Ms. Vance—complete with corporate credit card receipts used to fund her luxury apartment in Tribeca—we also uncovered a massive, systemic embezzlement scheme."
My breath caught. "Embezzlement?"
"He's been siphoning funds from his company’s pension accounts for over three years to cover speculative crypto losses and offshore gambling debts," Rocco explained, a cold smile touching his lips. "Federal white-collar investigators received an anonymous, highly detailed tip packet at 3:15 a.m. By sunrise, the SEC will freeze all of his personal assets, revoke his passport, and issue an arrest warrant."
I sat back against the pillows, a cold, heavy satisfaction washing over me.
Barrett had spent ten years treating me like nothing. He had told me I was weak, dependent, and incapable of surviving without him. In less than six hours, my family had dismantled his entire empire, turning his pristine Wall Street reputation into ash.
"What about Taryn?" I asked quietly.
Rocco hesitated, glancing at my father before answering. "Ms. Vance was... escorted off the property. Her family's boutique PR firm lost every single corporate client before dawn. By noon today, she won't even be able to book a table at a decent restaurant in Manhattan, let alone show her face in public."
My father finally took a slow sip of his scotch, setting the glass down on the mahogany table with a soft clink. He turned his dark, intense gaze toward me.
"You should have called me ten years ago, butterfly," my father said, his voice carrying a quiet, heavy regret. "You tried to live in their world. You tried to be gentle, ordinary, and clean. But wolves don't change their nature just because they wear sheepskin. And neither do men like Barrett Hayes."
"I wanted a normal life, Dad," I whispered, looking down at my bandaged hands. "I thought love was enough."
"Love is a luxury," my father replied, standing up and walking over to my bedside, resting his weathered hand gently over mine. "Power and loyalty are the only things that keep you alive. And tonight, your husband learned what happens when you cross the family that owns the shadows of this city."

He paused, a faint, dangerous smile curving his lips.
"And the best part, Mallory? We haven't even started yet."
