Chapter 3 - The Scramble for SurvivalThe silence in the dining room lasted only a few seconds before absolute, unadulterated panic took over.

Brendan leaped out of his chair, falling to his knees right in front of me. The man who had spent the last three months treating me like dirt, watching his mother dump filthy water over my head with a smug grin, now grabbed the hem of my soaked, dirty dress, pressing his forehead against my shoes.
“Cassidy! Please!” Brendan sobbed, his voice cracking with hysterical desperation. “I’m begging you! It was a mistake! Mom went too far, we both went too far! We didn't know! If we had known you were... if we had known you owned Apex... we would never—!”
“You would never what?” I interrupted, looking down at him with cold detachment. “You would have hidden your contempt better? You would have pretended to respect me while you continued to cheat on me with Jessica behind my back?”
Brendan flinched violently. He looked up, his eyes wide with shock. “You... you knew about Jessica?”
“Brendan, I own the telecom servers your phone routes through,” I said matter-of-factly. “Do you really think a billionaire owner of a global tech empire wouldn't notice her husband forwarding corporate hotel receipts to a secret mistress?”
Jessica stepped back, her face contorting with rage and fear. She pointed a shaky finger at me. “You bitch! You set us up! You trapped him! You sat here and let us humiliate you just so you could destroy us!”
“No,” I replied, turning my gaze slowly toward Jessica. “She didn't trap him. She invited me to Sunday dinner specifically to humiliate me. She brought the bucket of water. She orchestrated the entire display of cruelty to prove how superior she was to the ‘poor, pregnant burden’ her son discarded.”
I looked back down at Brendan, who was clutching my ankles as if I were his last lifeline in a sinking ocean liner.
“Please, Cassidy... the baby,” Brendan whimpered, playing his final, pathetic card. “Think of our daughter! She needs a father! She needs a stable home, security, a future!”
“My daughter will have all of those things,” I answered firmly, gently pulling my dress free from his trembling grip. “And none of them will ever involve a man who watched his mother humiliate her mother while she was seven months pregnant.”
Diane, realizing that groveling wasn't going to work, suddenly snapped out of her shock. Her face turned a furious, mottled shade of crimson. She lunged forward across the table, her fingernails clawing at the air.
“You ungrateful little whore!” Diane screamed, abandoning all pretense of polite society. “You think you can ruin us?! You think you can destroy the Whitaker family dynasty just because you got lucky with some tech startup?! I’ll expose you! I’ll go to the press! I’ll tell the world what a ruthless, vindictive monster you are!”
Before Diane could take another step toward me, Marcus Vance moved with terrifying speed.
In a single, fluid motion, Marcus stepped directly between us, his massive frame blocking Diane entirely. He reached into his suit jacket and pulled out a thick Manila folder, slapping it down hard onto the dining table right in front of her.
“Go ahead, Mrs. Whitaker,” Marcus said, his voice cold and steady. “Tell the press. But before you do, you might want to review the federal indictments contained in this file.”
Diane froze, her hands hovering in mid-air. “What... what is this?”
“That,” Marcus explained smoothly, “is the forensic accounting audit of the Whitaker family charitable foundation over the last six years. Embezzlement of donor funds, fraudulent tax write-offs, insider trading through shell companies registered under your brother’s name, and illicit real estate kickbacks.”
Diane staggered backward, crashing heavily into her chair. Her face turned ash-white. “That’s... that’s impossible... those records were sealed...”
“Nothing is sealed from Apex Global’s security division when the owner gives the word,” Marcus stated. “The moment you dumped that bucket of water on Supreme Director Bennett, I transmitted those files directly to the Department of Justice and the IRS Fraud Division. Federal marshals are already en route to freeze your personal bank accounts and seize this property under asset forfeiture laws.”
As if on cue, the muffled sound of heavy sirens wailed in the distance, growing louder and closer with every second.
Headlights swept across the living room windows as multiple black SUVs and unmarked federal vehicles turned sharply into the long driveway, blocking all exits.

Jessica began to hyperventilate, clutching her chest as tears streamed down her face. “No... no, no, no! I’m just an employee! I didn't steal anything! This isn't my fault!”
Brendan remained on his knees on the floor, staring blankly at the Persian rug as the heavy thud of boots echoed up the front steps. The invincible Whitaker family empire—built on arrogance, cruelty, and corruption—had been completely obliterated in less than fifteen minutes.
