Chapter 5 - The Arrival of Federal MarshalsThe words hung in the air like a gunshot.

Federal Marshals Office.

Preston stood in the center of his ransacked office, the papers of Folder Six fluttering from his shaking hands onto the floor like autumn leaves. His throat went completely dry. He tried to speak, but no sound came out—only a pathetic, ragged gasp of air.

Heavy boots stepped across the threshold of his office. Two men in dark suits, wearing federal tactical vests and badges clearly displayed on their belts, strode into the room. Behind them stood Marcus Vance, my high-powered divorce attorney, and two local police officers.

"Preston Vaughn?" the lead marshal asked, stepping forward with a crisp, unemotional professionalism.

"I... there's been a mistake," Preston stammered, holding his hands up defensively as if trying to push reality away. "I’m a businessman! I'm a respected member of the community! What is the meaning of this?!"

The marshal didn't blink. He pulled a folded set of documents from his inner pocket and snapped open a pair of steel handcuffs.

"Preston Vaughn, you are being placed under arrest pursuant to a federal warrant issued by the Northern District of Illinois for wire fraud, embezzlement, and securities tampering," the marshal recited mechanically. "You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can and will be used against you in a court of law."

"No! Wait!" Preston panicked, backing away until his spine hit the bookshelf, sending a cascade of leather-bound legal texts crashing down around his ankles. "This is a setup! My wife—my wife did this! She broke into my files! She framed me!"

Marcus Vance stepped forward, adjusting his gold-rimmed glasses with an air of supreme, unbothered elegance. He looked down at the scattered folders on the floor, then up at Preston with a pitying smile.

"Mrs. Vaughn didn't frame you, Preston," Marcus said smoothly, his voice cutting through the panic. "She simply exercised her legal right as a co-owner and corporate officer to audit company records when suspicious transactions began draining the family accounts. And when she discovered federal felonies being committed under your signature, she fulfilled her civic duty by handing those records directly to the U.S. Attorney’s office."

"You... you bitch!" Preston screamed, his face turning a furious, mottled purple as he lunged forward toward Marcus.

Before he could take two steps, the two federal marshals moved with lightning speed. One grabbed Preston’s arm, twisting it behind his back, while the other forced him down against the mahogany desk, pressing his cheek hard against the polished wood where my wedding ring still rested.

Click. Click.

The cold steel cuffs locked tightly around his wrists.

"Stop resisting," the marshal commanded, hauling Preston up to his feet.

As they dragged him toward the office door, past the scattered folders and the empty desk where I used to sit waiting for him to come home from his "late meetings," Preston caught one last glimpse of his reflection in the dark glass of the bookshelf.

He looked old. Defeated. Ruined.

"Where is she?!" Preston roared over his shoulder as they marched him down the hallway. "Where is Meredith?! Tell her she can't do this to me!"

Marcus watched him go without the slightest bit of sympathy. "Mrs. Vaughn is currently on a private flight to the Caribbean with her son," Marcus called out calmly. "And she sends her regards."
