Chapter 4 - The Unraveling of the FoundationPreston stared down at the stack of manila folders as if they were venomous snakes coiled on the kitchen island. For a long moment, he didn't move. His chest heaved beneath his expensive cashmere sweater, his breathing turning shallow and ragged as the sheer weight of my composure began to crush his arrogant illusions.

“What is this nonsense?” he choked out, though his voice lacked any real conviction. He grabbed the first folder, ripped open the metal clasp, and pulled out the crisp, white legal pages.

His eyes scanned the top header.

IN THE CIRCUIT COURT OF COOK COUNTY, ILLINOIS. IN RE THE MARRIAGE OF MEREDITH VANCE AND PRESTON VANCE.

“Divorce?” Preston barked out a harsh, disbelieving laugh, though sweat was already beading along his hairline. “You’re filing for divorce over this? You’ve been a stay-at-home wife for ten years! You have no independent income, no career, no leverage! You think you can just slap me with papers and walk away? I’ll bury you in court costs until you’re begging me to take you back!”

“Keep reading, Preston,” I replied, my voice as calm as a frozen lake. “Or better yet, skip ahead to folder number two.”

With trembling fingers, Preston dropped the first file and shoved open the second.

Emergency custody injunctions. Restraining orders prohibiting him from approaching Elliot’s school, my sister’s residence, or our primary home without a sheriff’s escort. A mandatory psychological evaluation ordered by the family court judge due to reckless endangerment of a minor across state lines.

Preston’s face flushed a violent, mottled crimson. “You manipulated the court! You lied to a judge!”

“Every statement in that folder is backed by time-stamped text messages, airline booking manifests, and hotel registration logs proving you checked into a multi-room luxury suite in Aspen with Clara Vance under the alias Mr. and Mrs. Preston Vance,” I stated evenly. “Your credit card statement from the resort is attached as Exhibit D, complete with charges for couples’ spa treatments and expensive champagne.”

He flinched as if struck across the face. He hadn't expected me to dig that deep. He had assumed my silence on New Year’s Eve meant I was paralyzed by shock, not gathering artillery.

He frantically tore open folder number three.

Asset freezes. Joint checking accounts locked. Corporate credit cards deactivated. The line of credit on our primary residence frozen pending marital property division.

“You froze my operational capital?!” Preston roared, slamming his fist down onto the granite island so hard the coffee mugs rattled. “Do you realize what you’ve done? Vance Logistics has a massive freight acquisition payment due to suppliers tomorrow morning! If those accounts are locked, my company defaults! I’ll be financially ruined!”

“Then I suggest you focus your energy on folder number four and five,” I remarked, leaning back in my stool and crossing my arms. “You’ll find details regarding the Lake Geneva property seizure, as well as the preliminary injunctions placed on your corporate shares.”

Preston was shaking now. His manicured facade had completely dissolved, leaving behind a desperate, cornered man who was slowly realizing that his wife wasn't a doormat—she was an executioner.

With frantic, clawing fingers, he grabbed folder number six.

He pulled out the documents inside, his eyes darting across columns of numbers, wire transfer receipts, and corporate ledgers.

And then, his confidence completely vanished.
