Chapter 5 - The Strike BackTwo weeks passed in a delicate, fragile equilibrium.

Caroline and the triplets remained in the penthouse suite under the watchful, loving care of Mrs. Higgins and a team of professional pediatric nurses I had personally vetted. I spent every spare minute I had between corporate restructuring meetings sitting on the nursery floor, learning how to change diapers, soothe colic at three in the morning, and burp three tiny babies without dropping them.

For the first time in my life, I felt like a human being instead of a corporate machine.

Then, the storm hit.

It was a rainy Tuesday afternoon when my private secretary, Sarah, buzzed me into my office with an urgent warning.

"Mr. Brooks, you have an unannounced visitor in the lobby," Sarah said, her voice tight with panic. "It’s Jonathan Vance... accompanied by federal marshals and reporters from the Wall Street Journal."

Before I could answer, the heavy oak door of my office swung open.

Jonathan Vance strode into the room wearing an expensive Italian suit, flanked by two armed federal agents and a photographer snapping flash pictures that lit up my office like lightning.

"Nathan Brooks," Jonathan announced with a venomous, triumphant smile, holding up a thick stack of federal subpoena documents. "You are being formally served with an emergency injunction on behalf of Margaret Brooks and the majority shareholder coalition."

I stood up slowly from my desk, my face impassive. "On what grounds, Jonathan?"

"On the grounds of corporate malfeasance, coercion of a senior citizen, and illegal asset seizure," Jonathan sneered, stepping closer to my desk. "Your mother has filed criminal charges claiming you forced her to sign away her voting shares under duress while mentally incapacitated. Furthermore, the SEC has frozen the Brooks Real Estate accounts pending an investigation into your sudden, unauthorized restructuring of corporate funds toward unverified charity trusts."

The flashbulbs flared again. Reporters muttered behind him, scribbling frantically in their notebooks.

Jonathan thought he had checkmated me. He thought he could use my mother’s legal desperation to reclaim control of the empire, destroy my reputation, and throw me into a corporate prison.

He didn't realize I had been expecting him.

"Are you finished, Jonathan?" I asked, my voice terrifyingly calm.

Jonathan’s triumphant smile faltered slightly. "What?"

I reached down into my desk drawer, pulled out a pristine, blue-backed federal document bearing the seal of the U.S. District Court of New York, and slid it across the mahogany wood.

"Before you and my mother filed your little extortion petition," I said, my voice dropping an octave into a cold, lethal register, "you might have wanted to check whose signature was on the secondary whistleblower affidavit filed by the federal prosecutor’s office this morning."

Jonathan glanced down at the paper. His eyes scanned the first paragraph, and the color drained completely from his face.

"This... this is impossible," he whispered, stumbling backward against the edge of my desk.

"Not impossible at all," I said, walking slowly around the desk until I stood right in front of him. "You didn't just help my mother embezzle twelve million dollars from the corporate trust five years ago, Jonathan. You personally routed three million of those laundered funds through an offshore shell company in the Cayman Islands registered under your brother-in-law’s name."

The federal agents standing on either side of Jonathan exchanged sharp, calculating glances. The lead marshal stepped forward, his hand resting casually on his holster.

"Mr. Vance," the marshal said coldly. "Is this true?"

"No! It’s a lie! He forged it!" Jonathan shrieked, his face turning a mottled shade of purple as he tried to back toward the door.

"Federal marshals," I said, looking straight at the officers. "Mr. Vance is currently a flight risk with active accounts in Zurich and the Caymans. I suggest you take him into custody before he boards his private jet to Geneva tonight."

May you like

Before Jonathan could scream another word, the silver handcuffs snapped around his wrists. The reporters’ cameras flashed frantically, capturing the exact moment the architect of my family’s corruption was dragged out of my office in disgrace.

The house of cards my mother and Jonathan built had finally collapsed into dust.
