Chapter 4 - The Serpent's NestThe basement server room of Whitmore Tower was freezing cold. The hum of hundreds of processing towers sounded like a swarm of mechanical hornets, flashing with green and blue LED lights.

Julian Whitmore stood in front of the master terminal, a sleek laptop plugged directly into the tower's primary fiber-optic mainframe. He was thirty-two years old, handsome, wearing a cashmere coat, sipping a glass of sparkling water like he was at a lounge.

"Almost done," Julian muttered to himself, watching the green progress bar on his screen hit 92%. "Just eight percent more, brother, and your empire belongs to someone who actually knows how to enjoy it."

The heavy steel reinforced doors of the server room slammed open with an explosive bang.

Julian jumped, dropping his water glass. The glass shattered across the raised flooring.

I walked into the freezing room, my coat unbuttoned, my hands stuffed into my pockets, flanked by Howard and four armed federal agents holding federal arrest warrants.

Julian’s face went completely white. His jaw worked silently for three seconds before he forced a crooked, arrogant smile onto his face.

"Edward!" Julian laughed nervously, stepping in front of the laptop screen. "What... what are you doing down here? You scared me to death! Why do you have federal agents with you?"

"I could ask you the same thing, Julian," I said, stopping ten feet away from him. "Why are you downloading the corporate treasury to an offshore account in the Cayman Islands at nine o'clock on a Monday morning?"

Julian's smile faltered. His eyes flicked nervously toward the stairwell exit behind me.

"I... I was just running a security audit," Julian lied, his voice rising an octave. "You know I oversee IT infrastructure! I was testing our emergency fund transfer protocols—"

"Save it, Julian," I cut in, my voice devoid of any warmth. "The man in the gray suit is already in federal custody. He talked five minutes after his knee was broken."

Julian froze. All the color drained from his face, leaving him looking like a corpse under the white fluorescent lights.

"He... he talked?" Julian whispered.

"He gave us the encrypted wire transfer records, the text messages from your burner phone, and the chemical supply receipts from the lab in New Jersey," Howard said, stepping forward with his tablet. "It's over, Julian."

Julian looked at me, his eyes suddenly filling with a terrifying mixture of shame, panic, and raw envy.

"Why, Julian?" I asked, my heart breaking into a thousand piece behind my ribcage. "I gave you everything. I bought you your penthouse. I paid off your gambling debts. I gave you a seat on my board! Why would you try to poison me?"

"Because you treated me like a child!" Julian screamed, his composure shattering completely as he threw his hands into the air. "You always played the great Edward Whitmore! The savior! The billionaire philanthropist! Everything I achieved was always 'thanks to my big brother'! I wanted what was mine! I built those software systems! I deserved the chair at the top!"

"You wanted to kill me for a title?" I asked softly.

"I wanted you out of my way!" Julian spat, tears of rage springing to his eyes. "You were never going to step down! You were going to die in that forty-second-floor office! So I just helped the process along!"

I stared at my younger brother—the boy I had held in my arms when our parents died, the boy I had protected from every cruel thing in the world—and realized that ambition had rotted his soul beyond repair.

"Take him," I told the federal agents.

"Edward! No! You can't do this to your own brother!" Julian shrieked as the agents grabbed his arms, slamming him against the server rack, pinning his wrists behind his back in steel handcuffs. "Edward! Think of Mom and Dad! You can't put me in prison!"

"Mom and Dad taught me to protect family," I said quietly, turning my back on him as the agents dragged him away, his screams echoing off the steel walls. "And you stopped being my family the moment you put poison in my cup."
